“We need, we need to understand that these illnesses need more than just a medication need somebody to talk to them, we need support networks build around people.” - Dr. Dan Reidenberg of SAVE

Often people don’t realize they’re suffering from a treatable illness, and seeking help may not even enter their mind. Medication is a temporary fix, but being that support system may save a life.

Here are a few critically acclaimed reviews:

"This movie does an amazing job of telling the story of mental illness from a perspective of those helpless to understand or help those afflicted, but whom are loved dearly. For anyone who has lived or loved someone with mental illness, this will surely draw parallels, and for those who haven’t, it certainly pulls back the curtain and allows a peek into the confusing and trying world of being in such a situation. And for Albert Dabah, who plays his own father intensely, this movie serves as a heartbreaking love letter to his dear siblings who will forever be in his thoughts, even after decades have passed." Tawny Farber, Set the Tape

“You’ve given us a movie not only to think about, but to feel about. And in this world that I spend my life watching movies where they don’t do that, where it’s basically just escapism, you’ve given us a movie that matters.” Peter Travers, Critic at Rolling Stone Magazine

“The pacing displays a care and patience with the material that takes viewers into a time of rotary phones and baseball coaches smoking ci******es, with occasional nods to the changing times. The filmmakers often employ a stationary camera and medium-wide shots, giving the film a naturalistic, "fly on the wall" feel that adds to the film's emotional arc.” Mike Fishman, Independent Film Now

03/01/2021

Hey guys! My name is Allyssa and I have been an intern at Simba Productions for about a month now. The film Extra Innings (2020) has been rated as a 4.3/5 stars on Amazon and a 6.3/10 on IMBD. It has been a passion project 20 years in the making for director, writer, and producer Albert Dabah. After initially watching the film myself, I couldn’t help but reflect on what it meant to me. I felt that everything being depicted came from a place of honesty, which made the reality of it that much more impactful. Trying to get the word out and getting more people to watch the film has been an interesting task as I continue to find myself being immersed into the world of mental health and am reminded of its importance. With that in mind, all of the issues and conflicts transpiring in the film are not sugarcoated in any way, which really forces the viewer into a different mindset. I personally think that something that sets this film apart from a lot of other mainstream films is that Extra Innings doesn’t shy away from the cultural aspect at all. It evokes so much of what the youth today experiences. I believe it’s really important for people to watch Extra Innings, as it shows the complexity and depth of mental illness in a way that is so visceral and upfront. It’s very bold and daring to portray characters going through such tragic situations in a way that we might never be able to understand. In fact, in the latest episode of a podcast hosted by Albert Dabah, Dr. Dan Reidenberg of SAVE states that “Prejudice is put out there on somebody because they don't understand what's really going on.” But that’s what makes Extra Innings so special. The film makes the audience aware that the stigma and blame associated with mental illness could be even more life threatening than the illness itself. It made me attain a sense of hope. It reminded me of the power of cultural differences and the fragility of a family bond. Lastly, it reminded me that coming from a level of understanding is so crucial for human development and improvement.

We have received an overwhelmingly positive response by critics so here are just a few reviews:

“You can’t really see this movie and be somebody who has no passionate response to it. That’s the great thing about it, I see a lot of movies where they are Hollywood formula and the movie’s over and you say to your friends or your wife or husband: ‘where do we go eat?’ Here, you want to talk about this.” Peter Travers, Critic at Rolling Stone Magazine

“Mental illness wraps its claustrophobic fingers all around the already small world David tries to thrive in, he a bright, energetic boy trying to make the most of his troubled youth, pleasing his parents and secretly pursuing his baseball dreams. That of course means sacrifice, one for the other, a balance not always easy to maintain as he of course loves both. Then tragedy strikes and changes everything, signaling the end of childhood for David and just about everything with it. Or perhaps there is hope in the loss.” David Duprey, That Moment In

“Dabah’s film is completely unshy and that is a soaring strength where most movies soften to melodrama. Honest crudeness from characters destroys any possible sugarcoating. Extra Innings challenge su***de with a very virtuous balance of wrought drama and disarming brevity. This is can be a hard watch, but an overwhelmingly heartwarming one as well.” Don Shanahan, Every Movie Has A Lesson
