In 2025, the documented the second highest level of book censorship attempts ever and the continuation of an organized effort to systematically suppress voices and ideas that began in 2021. Last year, 4,235 unique titles were challenged, only five titles short of the highest number ever documented by ALA and significantly exceeding the annual average of 273 unique titles over the period from 2001-2020.

Book bans are on the rise in America. During the 2024-2025 school year, PEN America recorded 6,870 instances of books banned, from those centering racial inequality and LGBTQ+ themes to classics like 1984 and Anne Frank’s Diary. These bans were driven by new laws and regulations limiting the kinds of books that children can access.
