A Mighty Girl

Today's A Mighty Girl Community Pick: "Eliza" by Margaret McNamara. Thanks to the hit musical, many people know the story of the scrappy Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, but how much do you know about his wife, workmate, and inspiration Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton? From her work building schools and orphanages to raising funds for the Washington Monument, Eliza — who outlived her husband by fifty years — was a determined and resilient force for change in her time. This fascinating picture book biography about this Founding Mother is written in the form of a letter from Hamilton to her great-granddaughter, and is filled with exquisite illustrations that mirror 18th century American paintings, beautifully illuminating the life and influence of this extraordinary woman. Highly recommended for ages 5 to 9.

"Eliza" is available at https://www.amightygirl.com/eliza-schuyler-hamilton

There is also another recent picture book telling her story, "From a Small Seed: The Story of Eliza Hamilton" for ages 4 to 8 at https://www.amightygirl.com/from-a-small-seed

For adult readers interested in Eliza, we recommend the excellent historical fiction novels: "My Dear Hamilton: A Novel of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton" (https://www.amightygirl.com/my-dear-hamilton) and "I, Eliza Hamilton" (http://amzn.to/2GTbNKa)

There is also a young adult novel that brings to life the romance between young Eliza and Alexander, "Alex & Eliza," for ages 14 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/alex-eliza

A Mighty Girl

A Mighty Girl Pick of the Day: "The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read" by Rita Lorraine Hubbard. Imagine learning to read at the age of 116! When Mary Walker was born into slavery in 1848, she wasn't allowed to learn to read — and even once she was freed at the age of 15, there was always too much work to do to learn... or so she thought. At the age of 114, she was still healthy and had outlived her family. It was time, perhaps, to follow that long-held dream: "Could someone her age learn to read? She didn’t know, but by God, she was going to try." Walker was certified the nation's oldest student twice over, and at 116, she learned! This inspiring new picture book about a remarkable woman whose life spanned from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement shows that, with perseverance and dedication, there's nothing you can't achieve! Highly recommended for ages 5 to 9.

"The Oldest Student" is available at https://www.amightygirl.com/the-oldest-student

Penguin Random House

Black Lives Matter. Black Voices Matter. Black Stories Matter.

As Penguin Random House, we recognize that our company and our industry can and must do better.

We have taken the past week to reflect and listen, and to further identify how we can impact meaningful and lasting change in our company and in our society.

Here is our plan of action:

Donation & Support
We are increasing our annual donation to We Need Diverse Books and expanding our partnership with them to become an inaugural sponsor of the Black Creatives Fund, which will focus on encouraging and amplifying the work of Black creatives in order to bring more Black voices and stories to the world. The program will include education and resources, mentorship through direct access to published authors, and financial support through grants for each mentee in the program.

Diversity & Representation
We will increase the number of books we publish—and promote, market, and sell—by people of color. To start, we commit to auditing our publishing programs to determine how many books we currently publish by people of color, and we will communicate those results. This will allow us to set benchmarks to help us track and achieve this goal.

We will also need to make our community of employees as diverse as the community of readers we reach and wish to connect with. We will share the statistics related to our current workforce demographics with our employees and communicate clear goals for increasing our diversity from entry level to executive team.

Increased Leadership Investment in Diversity & Inclusion
As a step beyond the Unconscious Bias training already undertaken by much of our company, we will make antiracism training mandatory for all employees.

Career Growth and Psychological Safety and Belonging
Representation should extend to all levels of our business, and we are committed to creating a more inclusive leadership team.

Diversity & Inclusion will become a key component of our performance review processes, to ensure that all managers are being held accountable for the work they do toward making our company a truly inclusive place to work.

Penguin Random House is committed to driving lasting change in our company, our industry, and our world. These initiatives are works in progress—we are working to set specific targets, and will share them with you in the coming months.

for educators!
Thanks for the advance copy of One-Third Nerd! I can’t wait to read it and add it to my classroom library!
If you are a book lover you have to read this book!!! Interest Level: 3-6 What if someone told you what you could and couldn't read? Would that be fair? What if you got in major trouble for even having a book that was not endorsed by the school? Would that be fair either? The answer to both of those questions is NO! Well, this is exactly what is happening to June Harper. When she checks out a book from her school library that her parents deem inappropriate, it starts a snowball effect of bad things. First, an amazing librarian is put on administrative leave; second, a majority of library books were hauled out of the school library; and third, kids are getting suspended for even having an unapproved book in their possession. When June's parents take away ALL of her person books, she is left with only one book that she is forced to hide. Then June comes across a a small house on top of a wooden post that says it is a Little Free Library. June is ecstatic when she finds a book in there. Little does she know that when she takes that book (and many more) that she will break all the rules to defend the rite to read. Not only is she dealing with all of this, she is also dealing with middle school problems like best friends and boys. Will Ms. Bradshaw, the school librarian, get her job back? Will June get her first boyfriend, even at the expense of her best friend? Most importantly, will June be able to make a difference with her parents, the school system, and the PTSA? Will books still be banned or will June and all of the other students be able to read what they want? This is a must read!! I have mentioned several times in my blogs that I am a fairly slow reader. Normally it would take me several days to read a 275 page book. Not this book!! I read this book in just a few hours. Once I started I could not put it down. I don't know if it's because it's such a fantastic book or if it's because this subject is a subject that I am passionate about. Kids should have the right to read what they want and just because you and I may not like a book does not give us the right to judge it. I was so proud of June and how she took a stand for the right to read even when it went against her "good girl" persona. If you are a book lover this book is a must read!! Interest Level: 3-6 Imagine that your grandfather is in the body of a fourteen-year-old boy and goes to the same middle school as you do. How would you react? Well, Ellie actually loves spending time with her grandfather. And them being in the same school is a bonus when they get to work together on the county science fair project. In The Fourteenth Goldfish Ellie's grandfather, Melvin, discovered how to reverse time and become a teenager again. In The Third Mushroom, they stumble upon a way to grow missing body parts. Will this win them the science fair? Will Melvin stay in a teenage body forever? And what about middle school life? Can Ellie navigate friends, boyfriends, and a grandfather all at the same time? Interest Level: 3-6 What would you do if you were given a marionette doll and one day you touched her strings and you heard her thoughts? How freaked out would you be? Penny has spent so many years on the shelf in the museum watching all that goes on. Chance works in the museum helping Fortunato, an elderly man who inherited the museum from the cabinetmaker who was his teacher. When Fortunato is forced to sell the museum he gives Chance the life-sized marionette doll, Penny. When Chance touches Penny's strings they are able to communicate through their minds. What they don't know is an evil man is watching them and creates an opportunity for Chance and Penny to swap places. Penny is so excited to be in a human body, but not at the expense of Chance's soul. As Penny is trying to find a way to swap them back, Chance is stolen and now Penny doesn't know what to do. Chance's sister, Constance, steps in and is determined to save her brother. What she doesn't expect is to become friends with Penny. Will Penny and Constance be able to find Chance and swap back? Will Penny decide that she wants to keep the human body and leave Chance frozen in the wooden body? What about the evil man? Will he do whatever it takes to keep his marionette, even if it means death? This is a must read that you will not be able to put down until the end. Interest Level: 5-8 Imagine that you live in a place where you have to hide all of the time because you are being hunted? How would it feel to have to sneak around and hide all of the time? This is exactly Rook and Drift's life. They live in a place called Talhaven where magic used to abound. Then one day without any warning there was a great explosion in the doorway between Vora and Talhaven that causes the magic to die, or what magic is left is dangerous. Everyone who is left in Talhaven that has magic is now being sought after to be put in prison, or even worse, some just disappear. Drift and Rook are best friends. Drift can cause great winds with her magic and Rook can create magical doors to travel anywhere. Rook is always trying to create a door back home to Vora so that they can live in peace. One day when Rook has created a door a red fox jumps through and threatens everything they have ever known. Is the red fox an enemy come to harm them, or is the red fox the answer they have been looking for? Will Rook ever make the door to get them back home, or will Rook find out that home may be something different all together? Read this fast-paced, action packed, edge of your seat adventure to find out. This type of fantasy book is not usually my type of book but I received it from a publisher to review, so I did. Boy was I wrong! This book grabbed me from the beginning and wouldn't let go until I finished it. It was absolutely fantastic and Jaleigh Johnson now has a new fan! Do not miss this book!!
