Aborigines were the first people to live in Australia. They lived there for thousands of years before Europeans arrived, moving from place to place, hunting animals and gathering plants for food.
Aborigines worshipped the land, which they believe their ancestors made for them in a time they call dreamtime. They rote many songs and dances about dreamtime.
After the Europeans arrived, over a 200 years ago, the aborigines lost their lands, and many of them were killed. They only had spears and boomerang to defend themselves against the guns of the settlers.
There are now far fewer aborigines. Most have lost their traditional way of life, and took part in the Australian politics, religion, law, sports and the arts. Some places which are holy to the aborigines are now being given back their original aborigine names. Today the aborigines prefer to be called Kooris.
