Scenes from the auspicious grand opening of the Statue of Liberty Museum, with LUCKY LUKE and Jul as special guests! #FrenchComics
Last night, Lucky Luke’s new writer Jul was invited to the gala celebrating the opening of the brand new Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island, New York City. Jul wrote the latest (in French) Lucky Luke adventure, "A Cowboy in Paris", which revolves around Lady Liberty’s trials on both sides of the Atlantic. This connection, and famous designer (and godmother to the museum) Diane Von Fürstenberg’s support, earned a few pages of the comic a place in the permanent exhibition, and Jul an invitation to the star-studded event … where he met some rather well-known people!
“Give me your tired, your comic-deprived, your huddled masses yearning for a good read, the wretched refuse of your barren bookshops …”

"While in the desert, Lucky Luke finds a giant bronze hand belonging to the statue designed by Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), gifted to America by the French in the late 19th century. The image is also reminiscent of the final scene of Franklin J. Shaffner’s movie Planet of the Apes."
Lucky Luke is the main character in a Francophone comic-book series, but is all but unknown in the United States where the market is dominated by superheroes from the Marvel franchise. For the firs…

"As with Audubon Jérémie Royer’s artwork is utterly sublime and perhaps even more gorgeous this time around. His classical Euro style has the expressive small eyes of a classic Bande Dessinée and are mixed with some beautifully rendered landscapes, seascapes that are truly breath taking."
If you loved Fabien Grolleau and Jérémie Royer's award-winning AUDUBON, get to your local store to catch DARWIN sailing in! Out now.
Fabian Grolleau and Jérémie Royer’s follow up to Audubon: On The Wings of the World, continues the same beautiful and thought provoking look at the history of a prominent 18th century scientist in Darwin: An Unexpected Journey.

"Flore Piacentino, project manager, French Publishers Association/Syndicat national de l’edition, tells LJ that “half of the [French] population reads at least one Bande dessinée per year, with 35 percent of books borrowed [from libraries] in France being graphic novels.” Furthermore, over the past decade, sales of French comics for adults and children, manga, and American comics have strongly increased. Highlighting the growing success of translated French works for American audiences, Piacentino says that “each year, translation rights for more than 200 French comics are sold to American publishers.” #FrenchComics featured in Library Journal!
