New York’s patron saint of PPE went $600,000 in debt to outfit workers — and hospitals keep turning her down

Please help our frontline heroes!

Masks, face shields and PPE —the organization, Cut Red Tape 4 Heroes, is giving them directly to frontline workers NOW—2800 of them yesterday— in hard hit New York hospitals. They are also supplying them to staff at homeless shelters so that the shelters can remain open.

I’ve known the organizer of Cut Red Tape 4 Heroes for twenty years, Rhonda Shearer, a dear friend. I’ve long admired her philanthropic work. Among her charitable works, she served for many years on the board of Housing Works, one of the most successful programs in the country for the homeless. She founded the Housing Works Thrift Stores, and she also raised $1 million to provide boots and protective gear for firefighters doing recovery at Ground Zero. Through her invitation, I once spent an evening at Ground Zero fitting firefighters with boots, and was moved to tears to see how grateful the firefighters were to have protective gear for their dangerous work. I am so grateful she provided a way to help our heroes immediately and efficiently —without red tape and government interference.

You can be assured that 100% of your 501c(3) donation goes to supplying protective gear where it is needed now.

Along with cheering our frontline heroes in the evening, please add to the pot. Even $5 is a message of thanks and more protective gear.

Please SHARE and help us start a viral wave of support for healthcare workers who are putting their lives at risk.

"While public safety is certainly part of any reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions imposed on traditionally First Amendment protected activities, we are very concerned that this antiquated 'avigation' law is being used in an arbitrary and capricious manner to chill newsgathering efforts to report on a matter of grave public concern, especially when the drone flight appear to be in compliance with current FAA airspace regulations," Osterreicher said in a statement. "I believe reporting on and images of mass burials anywhere in the U.S. is a newsworthy event but especially during the pandemic it is certainly a matter of public concern. The fact that those being buried are the city’s poorest residents only adds to the tragedy," Osterreicher said, noting that news outlets also reported on Iran's mass graves used to bury people who have died of the novel coronavirus. "It is truly unfortunate that we can use satellite imagery to report this type of news elsewhere but seek to penalize journalists for similar reporting in NYC using drones."
