Last week Bridge Multimedia’s Senior Project Director, Dr. Wendy Sapp, delivered a presentation at the 18th annual Serious Play Conference. Serious Play is North America’s largest seminar dedicated to gaming, learning, and exploring how gamification is transforming education, training, and knowledge mobilization. Dr. Sapp’s 2-hour workshop titled Accessible Games Through Universal Design demonstrated how to build accessibility into standard game play and use settings for individual customization to meet players’ specific needs.
The interactive workshop also focused on reducing or eliminating barriers that people with temporary and permanent disabilities face when gaming. Dr. Sapp discussed promising practices in inclusive game design, demonstrated accessible games currently on the market, and invited attendees to brainstorm to generate ideas for creative and engaging accessibility. Throughout the session, attendees developed a “tool kit” of concrete skills and strategies to create accessible games for players with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.
Dr. Sapp said, “Presenting this workshop was an amazing opportunity to share the knowledge and experience that Bridge has accumulated through creating accessible games that do more than just check the boxes of accessibility. The more people who understand the need for true, deep accessibility and the concrete ways to incorporate that accessibility into their games, the more opportunities there will be for all children, including those with disabilities, to learn and play.
