From Bare Rock to a Cosy Cedar Sauna I found a granite cliff with a stream running at its base and built a little off-grid sauna retreat into it. First I cut a door into the rock and built a covered timber deck out over the stream, with a stone cold plunge pool fed straight from the water. Then I hollowed a room out of the cliff and lined it with cedar insulated floor and walls, tiered benches and a wood-burning stove with hot stones. Fire lit, water on the rocks, steam rising then straight out into the cold plunge. Powered off a little solar panel on the roof. From bare rock to a cosy cedar sauna by the stream. Full build, start to finish.

Building a Hidden Home Inside a Rock I found a granite cliff up in the hills and carved a whole home into it. First I built a little covered porch out from the cliff and an entrance into the rock a door and a window then I hollowed out two rooms. I made the first one a cosy living-kitchen with a wood floor, insulated wood-clad walls and a stone fireplace, then plastered the second room's vault smooth and white, fitted a window looking out over the rocks, and turned it into a warm cosy bedroom. Powered off a little solar panel on the porch. From solid rock to a hidden off-grid home. Full build, start to finish.

This Old Mill Powers Itself From the Stream I found an old stone watermill abandoned beside a forest stream-a broken water wheel, a collapsed roof, ivy through the walls. So I cleared it, repointed the stone, put on a new roof, fitted new windows and a door, and rebuilt the wooden water wheel so it turns in the stream again and powers the whole place through a small hydro generator. Inside I gutted it to a bare stone shell and built a cosy off-grid home: a wood floor, wood-lined walls under exposed beams, warm lights, a kitchenette, a bed and a wood stove, an old millstone kept as a feature, plus a compact tiled bathroom with a window looking right out onto the turning wheel. From a derelict mill to a warm hidden home in the woods. Full build, start to finish.

Everyone drove past this desert boulder. He moved inside it. Deep in the desert, under a massive overhanging rock, one man built an entire cozy home from scratch using the rock itself as the roof. Then he carved a whole second room straight into the stone: a hidden trophy study. No demolition of the rock's shape, only building and carving. This Rock Hasn't Moved in 10,000 Years - So I Built My House Around It This mossy giant has stood in the forest since the glaciers left - tons of granite, older than any road nearby, far too heavy to ever move. So I stopped trying to move it and built around it instead. A wide round wood floor went down first, then two rings of timber walls and a conical roof, all bending around the stone so it rises straight up through the middle of the house up past the living-kitchen, past a staircase that curves around its flank, into the bedroom tucked under the eaves. Then, because a rock this old has to be hiding something, I cut an arched door into its base, hollowed out its belly with a breaker, and turned the inside of the stone into a warm little den a wood floor, shelves, an armchair and a wood stove, all wrapped in solid granite. I Wrapped a Two-Storey Home Around an Ancient Tree and Carved a Cellar Into the Trunk I found a giant old tree in the forest and built a two-storey round timber cabin right around its trunk - a wide round wood floor laid first, two rings of timber walls, and a conical roof the tree grows straight up through. Downstairs is a cosy living-kitchen with the living trunk standing in the middle of the room; a staircase winds up around the trunk to a bedroom under the wood-clad cone. Then I cut an arched door into the trunk itself, hollowed it out with a chainsaw, and turned the inside of the tree into a tiny wine cellar - curved racks, oak barrels, candlelight and a little tasting table, all inside the living wood. Two floors held up by a tree, with a secret cellar hidden inside it. Full build, start to finish.
