Unknown arsonists torch Chief Chikomeni’s vehicle in Lumezi!

Unknown individuals have torched a vehicle belonging to Chief Chikomeni of the Chewa people in Lumezi District, Eastern Province, in what police have described as a suspected case of arson.

The incident occurred on the night of August 2, 2025, at approximately 23:00 hours, right outside the chief’s residence. The vehicle, a silver Mitsubishi Pajero with registration number AHB 4683 ZM, is valued at K250,000.

According to police, the 52-year-old traditional leader had parked the vehicle next to his bedroom window after returning from his field earlier in the day. He was later awakened by his dog barking outside.

"Upon hearing unusual noises, the chief looked out the window and saw his vehicle engulfed in flames," said Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba, who confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Lundazi.

Chief Chikomeni immediately alerted members of his household, who rushed to extinguish the blaze. Despite their efforts, the engine and front section of the vehicle were completely destroyed before the fire could be put out.

The chief reported the matter to Lumezi Police at around 05:00 hours today, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the suspected arson.

No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made as of this report. Police say inquiries are ongoing.

The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

NIGHT DRIVING LESSON ENDS IN CRASH AT MATERO LUTHERAN CHURCH

A nighttime defensive driving lesson turned disastrous when a Lusaka man teaching his wife how to drive under the influence ended with their vehicle crashing into the wall fence of the Matero Lutheran Church along Kazembe Road.

According to eyewitnesses, the wife, who was behind the wheel is believed to have mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake causing the car to suddenly turn and crash into the church’s perimeter wall.

The husband, wife, and the church caretaker have all been escorted to Matero Police Station where a formal report will be filed.

🦁 HERO RANGER HONOURED FOR BRAVERY AFTER LOSING LEG ON DUTY 🦿

Former wildlife ranger Kennedy Phiri, 66, has been honoured with a K5,000 bravery award on World Rangers Day (July 31) after sacrificing his leg in the line of duty.

🛡️ Phiri, who served 33 years in Zambia’s wildlife sector, suffered a life-altering injury while en route to collect his retirement documents in 2023. A road accident left him with a devastating leg injury, which later led to instant amputation.

🏅 Despite the trauma, Phiri remained deeply committed to wildlife conservation. Speaking to Kalemba, he shared how he put duty before comfort:

“I operated at Chiawa Wildlife Camp for years. I would request for a transfer, but because of my performance, the department insisted I stay. My goal was to serve my country not for personal gain.”

📚 However, since his retirement on December 31, 2023, Phiri says he has not received his full retirement benefits, which has left his family especially his two school-going children struggling financially.

🙌 He described the K5,000 award as a “bonus” amid hardship:

“If the government recognises me in such a manner, it’s a reprieve in light of the hardships I’m facing.”

🌍 Phiri’s story stands as a powerful tribute to the resilience, patriotism, and sacrifice of rangers who risk their lives to protect nature. He also encouraged his fellow rangers to remain committed and hardworking despite the challenges.

Fellow Citizens,

This morning, we had the honor of welcoming my brother, Advocate Gideon Dumo Boko, President of the Republic of Botswana, as we toured the exhibition stands at the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show here in Lusaka.

We are pleased to witness our farmers swiftly embracing climate-smart agricultural practices, perfectly aligning with this year’s theme: “Adapting to Climate Change.”

During our tour, we expressed our gratitude to the farmers for their unwavering resilience and dedication—a commitment that has yielded abundant harvests in the last farming season. Despite the drought of 2024, our farmers remained steadfast, ensuring food security for our nation. We also encouraged the adoption of modern technologies and irrigation systems, empowering farmers to maintain productivity even during challenging conditions.

We are deeply grateful to President Boko for accepting our invitation and gracing the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show with his presence.

Hakainde Hichilema,
President of the Republic of Zambia.

MONGU HEAD TEACHER CONVICTED AFTER GAMBLING AWAY SOCIAL CASH TRANSFER FUNDS

A MONGU-based head teacher has been found guilty of theft after diverting government funds meant for vulnerable households under the Social Cash Transfer (SCT) programme to fund his online sports betting activities.

Ernest Chilonga, 42, who was serving as head teacher at Mulwa Primary School, was convicted on one count of Theft by Public Servant, contrary to Sections 272 and 277 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

According to court records, Chilonga was appointed Pay Point Manager for the SCT programme in September 2024. On September 26, he withdrew a total of K68,320 from the Zambia National Commercial Bank — K64,000 of which was designated for SCT beneficiaries, and K4,320 as his official allowance.

However, instead of returning to school to disburse the funds, Chilonga checked into a lodge and began wagering the SCT money on an online betting platform. Within days, the entire K64,000 meant for vulnerable citizens was lost.

On October 7, Chilonga summoned the intended beneficiaries to the school and initially claimed he had forgotten the bag containing the money at home. He later returned and told the gathering that his house had been broken into and the funds stolen.

During trial, five witnesses testified against him. Mongu Magistrate Maloti Phiri found Chilonga guilty on July 29, 2025, after concluding that the accused had misappropriated public funds entrusted to him.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Public Prosecutor Grace Mulafulafu. Sentencing has been reserved for August 8, 2025.

JAILED former Lusaka Province minister Bowman Lusambo has sued Chief Nkana, Godfrey Shamanena, demanding over $100,000 allegedly owed to him from the sale of Bismark Mining Limited.

Mr Lusambo is seeking $105,000, the amount he claims is due from the sale, and has also filed for an interlocutory injunction to freeze accounts and prevent any further transactions.

In the court documents filed before Lusaka High Court, Mr Lusambo also wants the court to order payment of interest on the US$105,000.

Mr Lusambo submits that he was at all material times actively involved in the facilitation and investment processes relating to the sale of Bismark Mining Limited.

He said the defendant, Chief Nkana, received the full sale proceeds in respect of the sale of the mine.

The plaintiff submits that at various times in 2021 and 2022, he facilitated negotiations and invested substantial resources into legal and commercial efforts aimed at the resolution and ultimate sale of Bismark Mining Limited.
