The Rodent Hour

The Rodent Hour The Rodent Hour plays R'n'R, independent R'n'R from Brooklyn & beyond every Monday evening at 8:00 PM The name of the show is an homage to the friends that I made during my misspent youth, those lifelong friends who joined me on those weekend nights so many years ago and whose eclectic tastes still influence the selection of artists and music that I feature on the show.

I like to think that my love of music is bred in bone from the nights spent watching the emergence of the Canadian independent music scene in the northern city of Edmonton, Alberta. Many nights were spent in the middle of a thundering local music scene supporting local independent bands like SNFU, Troc ’59, Route 66, Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra and The Thieves, while the universi

Hey PDX music fans!

I'm trying to find out the name of a female-fronted rock band from PDX that just released a song called "Elephant". The song's brilliant and I would like to pick up some of their music, but the song is on an anonymous playlist.

All I have to go on is the name of the song and some lyrics.

"Compassion is an elephant that drags us across a cold, hard ground."

Here's a 2017 picture of Kool Stuff Katie, who I visited with at Freeform Portland

Wanda and Jackson stopped by @hankssaloon to pay their respects the other day.

It’s downright criminal that more than three years after they were forced to close their doors the developers still haven’t started work. Not that I want to see more soulless buildings in Brooklyn but that could have been three more years of a great dive bar and a cool venue for independent artists.

After 10+ years of hosting The Rodent Hour, including the last five on Radio Free Brooklyn, I made the decision to wrap up the show.

On January 31st, the good people of InCircles were my guests and I really couldn't have asked for a better group of people to close out the show with. Jewlee, Ozzie and Matt made sure that we went out with something a lot louder than a bang as they played a live set for our final broadcast.

Thanks to everyone who’s listened over the years. I hope you’ll agree with me when I say there’s so much good music being created by independent artists these days.

A huge thank you to all of the independent artists, both guests and otherwise, who continue to pour their heart and soul into making so much fantastic music. Music that has helped enrich my life more than anyone can imagine.

Thanks to Kate Hoos for taking so many great pictures and for being a wonderful guest over the years.

Is Old Music Killing New Music?

Thank you for being part of the minority! The people who still listen to new music, the people who still buy new music and the people who still go out and listen to new music being created by independent artists.

Old songs now represent 70 percent of the U.S. music market. Even worse: The new-music market is actually shrinking.

Great music by our guest plus killer tunes by Lee Harrington Lynda Mandolyn and The Chelsea Curve, both on Red on Red Records, BERRIES, X-Ray Love, Brenyama, Black Widows and The Dead Coats.

The band does have a bunch of upcoming show so make sure that you follow them on social media in order to stay as up-to-date as possible in our ever-evolving situation. Stay safe.

Road trip to Syracuse for the holidays and I started the trip by listening to my recent visit with A Very Special Episode.

https://bit.ly/AVerySpecialEpisode

After hearing them say so many nice things about The Royal They, I decided to listen to my 2018 visit with Rick, Michelle and Darrell. I gotta tell ya, hearing the three of them express such love for the people around them was definitely the "timeline cleanse" that I needed.

Also, the music on the show by QWAM, The World's Greatest Detective, Mean Motor Scooter, Escobar and Paul Mex, was pretty fantastic.

Stay safe everyone.

The Rodent Hour Ep. #237 - Ellen Foley

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to spend an hour with Ellen Foley at Radio Free Brooklyn.

We had a great time talking about her latest release, her first NYC rock show in six years (it was pretty fantastic), her, at the time, upcoming show (it was unfortunately canceled), the fact that she's kind of an expert on duets, and her love of artists with a "girl group vibe".

During the show we blended tracks from "Fighting Words" with music from her extensive back catalog plus songs by Madisyn Whajne, HOT Laundry, X-Ray Love and Bad Kitty. Oh ya, we also played something by The Clash.

Click on the link below to listen. I think you'll enjoy the show.

Change of plans!

I'm not feeling at the top of my game right now so I'm going to exercise what will hopefully be an overabundance of caution and cancel this evening's visit with MONTE.

In its place we're going to rebroadcast my 2019 visit with Caitlin and Meghan. As you can imagine it was a lot of fun. Show playlist features a bunch of tracks from " A Merry MONTE Christmas" plus The Red Fuze, The Detroit Cobras, InCircles and Astradica.

Have you heard of maryshelleybandd? If you haven't yet I'm here to tell you that you need to listen to them. Now!

“Imagine if The Clash went to a Devo dance party and Jack White threw up all over the dance floor.”

During my in-studio visit with Charlie and Sam, plus Jackson on the phone, we got to rock some Frankensteiner, Sh*tbats, Year of October, The Molice, The Rizzos, The Macks and Stan Ridgway.

After spending 30-days in FB jail I'm doing my best to get caught up on the sharing of recent episodes.

This show was originally broadcast on November 29, 2021. For detailed track listing please visit our show page on Spinitron. https://bit.ly/RodentHourOnSpinitron Tune in every Monday evening @ 8PM Eastern, only on Radio Free Brooklyn.

The Rodent Hour Ep. #238 - Nihiloceros

Absolutely fantastic time speaking with Mike from Nihiloceros at Radio Free Brooklyn this past Monday.

2021 has been a weird year for everyone, and it's not over yet, but I think it was a pretty good year for Nihiloceros. They released a critically acclaimed EP, "Self Destroy", which is now available on vinyl from Totally Real Records, they performed at the inaugural The Wavy Awards and they played a ton of shows, winning new fans and making friends at every one of them.

On the show playlist you'll hear tracks from "Self Destroy" plus music by Sh*tbats, Desert Sharks, STIFF RICHARDS, Detroit & the Gobblers, Jeerleader, Thee Gunlocks and Strange Colours on Slovenly Recordings.

N.B. For those who may not know already, tonight's show at Our Wicked Lady has been canceled. Stay safe everyone.
