Celebrating the birthday of American composer Howard Hanson, born this day in 1896, with excerpts from two orchestra works frequently performed by students at contest and festival! "Rhythmic Variations on Two Ancient Hymns" (AS62) was commissioned by the American String Teachers Association and performed at the 1976 Music Educators National Conference. The first movement of "Symphony No. 2" (Romantic) was used in the 1979 film, Alien. This edition for string orchestra and harp (AS66) has put Hanson's lush, sweeping score within the reach of younger ensembles.
Hanson's success as a serious composer was surpassed only by his passion for music education, serving 40 years as the director of the Eastman School of Music and becoming heavily involved with the National Association of Schools of Music, the Music Teachers National Association, and the Music Educator National Conference. His legacy of teaching, encouraging, and inspiring young musicians will be felt for generations to come.
