William Grant Still story

Known as “The Dean of African American composers,” William Grant Still (1895-1978) stands among the most barrier-shattering composers in U.S. history.

His works often blend uniquely American genres, including blues, jazz, and spirituals, with traditional classical elements. No matter the texture, tempo, or key of Still’s pieces, listeners can access a lyrical, atmospheric sensibility that feels uniquely 20th-century American, yet timeless; a moment in history that represents the musical expressions of the past while also anticipating the styles of the future.

Featuring Michael John Trotta's "Veni, Veni, Emmanuel," Choral Editor's Choice honoree and year-round favorite

❄This holiday for choir, string orchestra, or concert band, experience the magic of ✨"Veni, Veni, Emmanuel"✨as composed by the world-renowned Michael John Trotta, and see why music educators and students across the country have fallen in love with this timeless classic.
❄🔔❄
Trotta conceived this well-known Latin text as a dialogue between supplicants and the Creator, a combination of old and new. He masterfully juxtaposes a personal longing for something still to come with the steadfast assurance of something ever-present, yet not always seen. While the original theme is associated with the Christmas season, the wider theme of longing for something greater is universal to the human condition and allows this piece to be programmed throughout the year. A fitting piece for any concert, contest or festival!

Spelman College Glee Club - "Children, Go Where I Send Thee"

The African American Spiritual “Children, Go Where I Send Thee” was made popular by the Golden Gate Quartet in the 1930s. Willie T. Johnson, the lead singer of the group, is the father of Dr. Kevin Phillip Johnson, the arranger of this version and one of the newest composers to join the Carl Fischer family with his Soulful Singing Series. The composer, like his father, uses rhythm in exciting new ways to deliver spirituals to contemporary audiences, and this uptempo arrangement includes djembe, shaker, and bass guitar parts, in addition to piano accompaniment, as well as an optional rap section, making it guaranteed to invigorate any holiday concert!

Check out this video of the Spelman College Glee Club performing the piece at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sMT69Adeog&list=RD3sMT69Adeog&start_radio=1 featuring Dr. Johnson on the djembe.

One of Gordon’s most recent works, “Intimate Apparel” tells the story of Esther, an African American seamstress living in New York City at the beginning of the 20th century. Kyle Pederson's "Stars" was born out of a life-long fascination with the night sky, and the text is a meditation on the interconnectedness of creation. Since we are the “stuff of stars,” where will we cast our own light? Whose world will we impact? This piece seeks to evoke the vastness and mystery of space through dense harmonies, simultaneously capturing the intimacy of connection. Now available for advanced SSAA Choirs (CM9722) and SATB Voices (CM9609).

The Teton Range is part of the Rocky Mountain chain, just east of the Idaho border and south of Yellowstone National Park. The name of this majestic range has its roots in the Shoshone “teewinet,” meaning “many pinnacles." “The Grand Tetons,” written by veteran Fischer Carl Strommen, involves mixed-meters and a swing-like feeling, followed by more strident material leading to a recapitulation of the opening theme as the piece draws to a close.

Ed Kiefer’s setting of the beautiful holiday classic “The Holly and the Ivy” is accessible for very young bands. Its memorable melody, notated in a comfortable range, is passed around the sections of ensemble as the other parts play accompaniments that are interesting, yet not difficult. The piece begins softly, building to a minor section before returning to major, making it a great opportunity to introduce students to bridge form!
