A child’s brain develops faster with exposure to music education

Hey there music educators! There have been numerous studies about brain development and music education. Most, if not all, conclude that learning music stimulates faster brain development. What do you think? Are their findings consistent with your experience as teachers?

https://musiceducationworks.wordpress.com/2016/06/19/a-childs-brain-develops-faster-with-exposure-to-music/

A study by researchers at the University of Southern California shows that exposure to music and music instruction accelerates the brain development of young children.

Pencil it in now! 2022 marks Lukas Foss' centennial celebration.

A true Renaissance man, Lukas Foss was that rare breed of musician, equally renowned as a composer, conductor, pianist, educator and spokesman for his art. As one of the most brilliant and respected figures in American music, Foss eagerly embraced the musical languages of his time, producing a body of over one hundred works that Aaron Copland described as including "among the most original and stimulating compositions in American Music."

Start Your Engines (Peter Sciaino)

"Start Your Engines" pays homage to the iconic phrase "Gentlemen, start your engines," traditionally used at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This exciting concert selection for young band features the percussion section with opportunities for doubling parts if needed. The band “revs up” right at the beginning as the opposing eighth notes in the drums evoke a race car engine at the starting line. As the piece continues, the winds have opportunities to shine in comfortable ranges with reasonable technical demands. "Start Your Engines" by Peter Sciaino Music is great for helping young bands sound their best at concert and beyond.

This new band is now available at your favorite retailer or carlfischer.com/BPS128.

"Teach the technique before students encounter it in the music. A common situation in school orchestras is for the director to select music that sounds good on the recording, without really reflecting if the music is at the appropriate grade level for the ensemble. Students should rarely, if ever, encounter completely new notes they've never seen in music they plan to perform. Before receiving the music, teachers should introduce the notes through either method books or scale studies. Practicing the notes before needing to use them makes learning the music much easier. This also applies to rhythms, which should definitely be taught in a methodical way before encountering them in music. Otherwise, the teacher will forever be teaching ideas by rote as needed rather than having in place a sequential system that introduces musical ideas in the proper order." - Todd Parrish, Carl Fischer Orchestra Editor

The title of this piece, "Mother Popcorn Revisited" comes from James Brown’s 1969 tune “Mother Popcorn.” The piece is infused with the energetic rhythms and pointed articulations found in funk music. Brown was one of Lee Hyla’s strong influences, but this is more than a simple recreation of funk -- Hyla captures the driving rhythmic energy within frequent tempo changes and time signature, present in much of his music. - Bryan Hayslett

Vincent Perischetti's Pageant is a mid-century gem of band writing and has been played across the country as a major work for concert band. It begins with a tranquil, almost hymn-like treatment of the main motive. Then, with the announcement from the snare drum, descends into a raucous parade of forward-marching rhythm and flashy colors.

In Carl Fischer's new Cornerstone Series, Pageant, and other major band repertoire like it, are being given new life with re-engraved scores and parts, editorial corrections and remarks. It is a fantastic addition to any concert band's library.

This is a photo of Edwin Franko Goldman in one of our recording sessions back in the day! Goldman was one of the most significant American band composers of the early 20th century and is best known for his marches. He also founded the Goldman Band of New York City and the American Bandmasters Association.

Lauren Bernofsky's "7th Street Beat" is fun and unique with beatbox percussion in the parts of all the instruments which imitates percussive effects. Don’t tell the students any rules about what notes to play or not play – simply offer them the opportunity to make up whatever they like, to show off their abilities and musical personalities! This piece makes for a great alternative selection in a spring concert program.

We at Carl Fischer Music would like to extend our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Robert Stallman as well as celebrate the life and work of this beloved flutist, author, and teacher.

To say that Stallman was simply a great flutist would be an understatement. The New York Times has written that "Mr. Stallman could bend the color and the character of his instrument to fit the music at hand." The London Times has described him as "no ordinary virtuoso of the flute, though virtuoso he emphatically is. He dazzles because of his penetrating artistry." And the Calgary Herald described Stallman as "A masterful player in every respect."

Fritz Kreisler's arrangement of "Songs My Mother Taught Me" by Dvorak is as enchantingly beautiful as the original vocal work. This bittersweet melody is one of the most well-known and beloved works from the Gypsy Songs.

The Art of Instrumental Accompanying (TXT8) is intended for pianists with all different levels of experience. Dr. Heasook Rhee draws from her vast career as a collaborative pianist, having performed with many distinguished artists of our time, including violinists Ivry gitlis, Ilya Grubert, Peter Zazofsky; cellists Marcio Carneiro, @Charles Curti, Karine Georgian, the late Samuel Mayes, Nathaniel Rosen, Jian Wang, Tilmann Wick; tenor Nikolai Gedda, bass-baritone Simon Estes, soprano Youngok Shin, the late flutist Julius Baker, and saxophonist Harvey Pittel.

"The Art of Instrumental Accompanying" serves as an introduction for pianists who are beginning to learn accompanying for major students, and also for teachers who might be interested in considering these reflections and examples. The author's aim is to introduce prospective accompanists to practical tools and concepts that improve their skills and provide a systematic and hierarchical understanding of pertinent ensemble issues. This is an invaluable tool from an expert artist.

Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2 "Romantic" is one of the most popular American Symphonies ever written. It was commissioned and premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 1930. The work was also famously used in the end credits of the movie Alien in 1979.

This new arrangement by Carl Fischer String Orchestra Editor, Todd Parrish, focuses on the hauntingly beautiful second theme of the first movement. Cellos are featured prominently, and often cover the soaring horn solos from the original work. Musicians will experience true symphonic beauty in this exquisite arrangement for strings and harp.

As a music educator, you are often called to step outside your comfort zone...

Stepping into a choral classroom with a band director's background can be daunting. "Yes, You Can! The Band Teacher’s Guide to Teaching Choirs" deals directly with the challenges faced by a teacher transitioning from conducting band to chorus. Dr. Derrick Fox's firsthand experience has helped him to create a handbook which is essential for the library of any band teacher hoping to teach choirs.

There's a reason Peter Mennin's "Canzona" is on 12 state lists. This piece has cemented itself as a major work in the band repertoire. From its beginnings as a commission from the Goldman Band, to the hundreds of performances since, "Canzona" has delighted band musicians and audiences alike with its fast-paced rhythms, flowing melodies, and polytonal harmonic language.

In Carl Fischer's new Cornerstone Band Edition Series, "Canzona," and other major band repertoire like it, are being given new life with re-engraved scores and parts, editorial corrections and remarks by Justin Tokke. It is a fantastic addition to any concert band's library.

Vulnerability Can Be a Key Teaching Tool—If You’re Willing to Go There

"Perhaps the greatest gift a teacher can give a student is the notion that, with work, just about anything is possible. Being vulnerable enough to show them the lived truth of that notion—what it means to be a lifelong student, that ego, not imperfection, is the enemy of expertise—works wonders for the soul of the weary student, and gives fuller context to the times when you do actually sit down and bang out a wonderfully polished phrase."
