On the ninth day, Ayudha Puja is performed, where tools, vehicles, books, and instruments are worshipped as a mark of gratitude. In Goa, Navratri is celebrated with the vibrant Makharotsav, where beautifully decorated makhars (temporary temple-like structures) are created to house the idol of Goddess Durga, adorned with flowers, lights, and art, and later carried in a grand procession for immersion. Adding to the festive spirit is the energetic Dhangar Dance, performed by the shepherd community as an offering to Goddess Mahalakshmi, where dancers in traditional attire move rhythmically to the beats of dhol and flute. Together, Makharotsav and Dhangar Dance reflect the devotional, cultural, and folk richness of Goa’s Navratri celebrations!

In Kerala, the last three days of Navratri are dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. On Durgashtami, books, musical instruments, and work tools are kept in the puja room in a ritual called Poojavaippu. On Mahanavami, Saraswati Puja is performed. On Vijayadashami, these items are taken back in a ritual known as Puja Eduppu, symbolizing a return to learning and work. The day also marks Vidyarambham, when children are initiated into education by writing their first letters. 🙏✨
