I filled in for my friend on a random day in NYC and it turned out to be a one-man-band recording of this episode of Call Her Daddy. I didn’t know who Alex Cooper was and that she would go on to sell her podcast for $125 million or who Julia Fox was. She was Kanye’s girlfriend at the time but who can keep up. It was a fascinating few hours and out of it came one of the biggest memes of 2022. That’s one thing I love about this job, is the variety. One minute I’m capturing Uncut Jamz. The next I’m pooping my pants in India. That sounds like a bad thing as I’m writing it but I promise it’s good.

My ten days in India had a lot of extremes. On one hand, I was in a new country with people I like, being useful and getting paid. What an immense privilege. On the other, a memory of a dimly lit bathroom with immobilizing food poisoning, the details of which I’ll spare you. I felt very far away from our new family of three.

There were parts of this trip that unlocked a level of culture shock that I didn’t know I still had in me, particularly in our first location, Varanasi. The locals met us with hospitality, curiosity, smiles and head bobbles. Since our cameras were usually out, we would often be flagged down to take pictures of people. They wouldn’t ask for the photo afterward… they just wanted us to have a photo of them? I loved it. All the quirkiness and beauty were tempered by the difficult living conditions. Bodies burn in open air. It’s hard to tell where the smoke ends and the pollution begins. The dead are sometimes placed in the Ganges, the very river people travel from everywhere to bathe in. Religion seems to wash over India and Varanasi feels like the drain. The poverty is palpable. If you have a soft heart, Varanasi just might break you.

When I got back to Brooklyn, I hugged my then 4 month old daughter and appreciated our small apartment that would probably be considered a luxury by billions of people on this planet. Oh how I love to travel.

Back in June, we had a shoot for Therm-a-Rest and introduced our very first ‘Set Baby.’ It was incredible watching produce with Kirby strapped to her—multitasking at its finest.

We’re so grateful to have clients who embrace us and our daughter on set. In the early days of CoenFilm, we used to worry about ‘looking professional enough’—whether it was dating, getting married, or now parenting while working together. Honestly, we even hid it sometimes.

But these days, we show up as we are, and it feels amazing that our clients trust and value us for what we bring to the table.

In all the energy it took to move to Spain, it’s taken a while to reflect on our time in NYC. For almost four years, Brooklyn was home and a constant source of inspiration. It made us better at what we do, changed how we see the world, and of course it was a lot of fun. She took us in and we’ll take her with us wherever we go.
