“Noctalgia." - Sky Grief

The loss of the night sky has several tangible and cultural impacts. Cultures around the world and throughout history have used the sky as a springboard for the imagination, painting heroes, monsters and myths in the constellations. The loss of that access and heritage is a loss of part of our humanity. Many animal species are suffering as well. What good are night-adapted senses in nocturnal species if the night sky isn't much darker than the daytime sky? Researchers have identified several species whose circadian rhythms are getting thrown off, making them vulnerable to predation (or, the reverse: the inability to effectively locate prey).

'Noctalgia' is a feature of the modern age.

Michigan's nightlife is looking up. The state's first International Dark Sky Park has been created. It's now one of only six in the U.S. and 10 in the world. Think about that. In lots of (too many?) places on Earth, you don't see

Riding the wide open freeway this summer took me to all four corners of this beautiful continent. I met some awesome people, seen some spectacular views, learned some things, and returned not the same person I was when I first parted. The wilderness is Blessed with many paths and many teachers.

Traveling across the USA during 2011 lead me to some memorable places, Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills Tennessee being one too mention. For a few days in early August I stayed up the road with some friends whom one of them were competing in the amateur motocross championship bike races. On the day of the race I sat by a small pond and took a moment from shooting photos of bikes to attempt capturing the flight of a dragonfly.

Later after reviewing the photos I did a little research and found some interesting history surrounding this ancient creature. The dragonfly has many wide and varied symbolic perceptions amongst various civilizations from Europe to Asia, and cultures whom passed on tales, folklore, and short stories across the globe for thousands of years. Amongst different Native Americans it could represent the soul of the dead and for another it could be a sign of purity - because the dragonfly eats from the wind.

They are known for fast flight and astonishing ariel feats, moving up, down, flying backwards, twisting, turning, and changing direction in an instant. Symbolic like many of our lives, this may be how they survived for so many years inhabiting two realms – water and air.
