ONCE AGAIN
I’ve noticed discourse on the true origins of house music by big names in the industry. The narrative is driven by the heteronormative perspective omitting invaluable contributions at the core of house music and that is BLACK AND BROWN Q***R PEOPLE, DJs and spaces.
The tendency to minimize LGBTQ+ contributions often appears through selective storytelling: Frankie Knuckles may be briefly labeled “the Godfather of House,” yet accounts then proceed as if his sexuality, the q***r membership of The Warehouse, and the larger gay nightlife network were unrelated to house’s development. THEY WERE RELATED AT EVERY LEVEL.
Many of the DJs who built the musical grammar of disco and house were gay or q***r, and their work created the conditions from which house emerged.
In house there in no such thing as a gay or straight party. House went global because the feeling was transferable. But the feeling was made locally…by Black and Brown q***r people transforming exclusion into community, rhythm into release, and the dance floor into a temporary world where another way of living could be felt.
Just my 2 cents 🙏🩵 Obra
