In 1999, atop Argentina’s 6,739-meter-high Llullaillaco volcano, archaeologists made a chilling discovery—La Doncella (“The Maiden”), a 15-year-old Inca girl sacrificed 500 years ago in a sacred ritual. Her perfectly preserved body was found in a seated position, hair braided, clothing intact, and skin still soft—frozen in near-sleep.
Experts believe she was chosen for the Capacocha ceremony, an Incan tradition that offered elite children to the gods. Drugged with coca leaves and alcohol, she likely passed peacefully in the thin, icy air. Her tomb, a stone chamber high in the Andes, remained sealed in subzero temperatures, halting decay and protecting her through the centuries.
Andrew Wilson, a forensic expert, described her as “the best-preserved mummy ever discovered”—so lifelike that she seems merely asleep. The Maiden offers a rare and haunting window into the spiritual world and solemn rituals of the Inca Empire.
