Button's Big Idea #
Barnaby Button was a tiny field mouse with a very big problem: he hated getting wet. Every morning, the dew on the grass made his whiskers droop. Every evening, sprinkles from the garden hose sent him scurrying.
"Oh, if only I had a umbrella!" he'd sigh.
His sister, Pip, always giggled. "Silly Barnaby! Mice don't use umbrellas!"
But Barnaby was a thinker. One sunny afternoon, a bright red poppy bloomed, its petals wide and strong. A sudden breeze snapped one petal right off! It floated down, landing perfectly beside Barnaby.
He poked it with his nose. It was light, yet firm. "Aha!" he squeaked.
Carefully, Barnaby nibbled a tiny hole in the center of the poppy petal. Then, he found a sturdy blade of grass. He threaded the grass stem through the hole, knotting it tightly.
He held it up. It looked... almost like a tiny, red umbrella!
The next morning, the grass was shimmering with dew. Barnaby grinned. He popped his new poppy-petal umbrella open and scurried out. The dew dripped harmlessly onto his little red roof. His whiskers stayed perfectly dry!
Pip, watching from their cozy burrow, gasped. "Barnaby! You did it!"
From that day on, Barnaby Button was the driest, happiest mouse in the field. And sometimes, even Pip would borrow his clever, colorful umbrella.
