The SS Great Britain, once the largest passenger ship in the world, returned to Bristol in July 1970 after being salvaged from the Falkland Islands, where she had been scuttled (deliberately sunk) in 1937.

For more than 30 years, she sat abandoned in saltwater, exposed to the elements, storms and corrosion. Upon her eventual return on a floating pontoon, she was in a very battered condition. Conservation teams gradually restored it to recreate her original appearance. Today, it's regarded as one of Britain’s most famous and historic ships.

This pioneering structure marked a turning point in English design and engineering. In 2019, the bridge was repainted to that original red‑brown colour, with six painters applying around 2,400 litres of paint. It's Grade 1 listed because of its exceptional historical significance.

An illustration of the Benwell Vallum Crossing from Historic England shows this rare surviving Roman stone causeway, which allowed access across the Vallum earthwork alongside Hadrian’s Wall.

Excavated in the 1930s, it featured a large gate and demonstrates how the Romans controlled entry to the military fort of Condercum.
