NEVER FORGET!
25 years ago, New York and the world was changed forever by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
McAllister employees at our 17 Battery headquarters along with hundreds of thousands of other people fled lower Manhattan when the twin towers were hit by passenger planes. In our New York Operations center, our team could see the smoke from the World Trade Center Tower 1 and dispatched every available tug to the Battery area. The Bruce, Eileen, Mary L., McAllister Brothers and McAllister Sisters all responded immediately. Shortly after being dispatched the call from the USCG came out "All available boats..."
Tugboats, ferries, private yachts, charter boats, and other workboats all answered the call. Over 500,000 people were safely evacuated from Lower Manhattan that day. It is one of the largest boatlifts in history executed by civilians with vessels and the courage to act. For their actions, Norman Mineta, then Secretary of Transportation, presented the Transportation 9-11 Medal for Services to 32 McAllister employees.
Twenty-five years later, we remember those who were lost, honor the heroes who responded, and recognize the ordinary mariners who stepped forward when their city needed them the most.
If you haven't seen it or have time to view it again, here is a tribute video of the 9/11 BoatLift.
