On the night of Wednesday, January 3, a shocked and saddened Clarkstown community gathered at Germonds Park to honor the memory of Ornella, Gabriel and Liam Morgan with a candlelight vigil and memorial wall. Arranged by friends of the family, approximately 1,000 community members, elected officials and community leaders attended to show their respect for the Morgans.

The mother and two boys (ages 12 and 10) were found dead in their New City home in the early hours of December 30 of an apparent murder-suicide at the hand of father Watson Morgan, a Sergeant with the Bronxville Police Department.

“Being here tonight is about honoring the Morgan family,” said Lloyd Poholski, Gabriel’s former Scoutmaster of Troop 97. “We’re healing, grieving, supporting each other. This is about a community coming together, wanting to help and not being sure how… So people grabbed onto bits and pieces (of the vigil) just to be part of it.”

New City’s Peach Pit Bowl Shop & Kitchen, which celebrated its fifth anniversary in November, boasts a tasty selection of acai bowls, smoothies and juices, along with a host of vegan, gluten-free and low-carb items.

Co-founders Shannon and Dave Bagatta—a former health restaurant manager and career chef, respectively—started the venture when they realized the area had limited options for those who strive to eat nutritiously.

The Village of Suffern’s Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 11 was a fitting way to thank local veterans for their days of service and sacrifice.

The event was hosted by Mayor Michael F. Curley, a veteran himself, and the Village of Suffern Board of Trustees, taking place outside Suffern Village Hall in front of the Soldiers Monument on Washington Avenue. A large crowd attended, lining both sides of the street.

After a processional of veterans from American Legion Post 859, followed by local dignitaries and Girl Scout troops 40118 and 40425, as well as Boy Scout Troop 21 and Cub Scout Troop 23, the ceremony commenced with Mayor Curley thanking the crowd for coming out to support these American heroes on the cold fall day. The mayor also shared a short history of the tradition of Veterans Day.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem by Suffern High School student Brody Seltzer, a moment of silence was taken for the veterans that are no longer with us. Father Michael Rafferty, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, also bestowed a blessing on the ceremony.

Local dignitaries such as Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, newly elected District 12 County Legislator Jesse Malowitz and County Clerk Donna Silberman then spoke of the honor and respect that must be paid to the men and women who serve.

Samantha Wettje is the co-founder of 16 Strong Project, an organization dedicated to helping children, teens and young adults affected by adverse childhood experiences.

The CDC defines ACEs as “potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood.”

“Growing up, there was mental illness and addiction with family members that really impacted our family, so that was something that I saw in middle school and high school, and I didn’t really know much about it,” she said.

Wettje felt alone and didn’t know that others shared her experiences.

More than 30 migrants have been discovered living in deplorable conditions in a less than 1,500-square foot, three-bedroom cape cod-style house in Clarkstown and town officials are cracking down on this and potentially other similar situations.

Town Supervisor George Hoehmann said some of the people living at the 295 New Hempstead Road, including eight or nine children, are believed to be undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. from Ecuador . Rockland officials believe the residents entered America via the Texas-Mexico boarder and were then transported to New York City before eventually coming to Rockland County.

The single family home was found in a cramped state with mattresses placed all over the property, including the basement and garage, electrical outlets totally overloaded and sheets set up to divide rooms. Hoehmann convened an emergency town board meeting on Monday to authorize town lawyers to appear in State Court seeking to evict the occupants and begin taking legal action against the landlord, Shloima Koppel of Monsey. The investigation into who is coordinating these movements of migrants is ongoing.
