Dennis Miller returns to Nonprofit Radio this week! His book is “A Guide to Recruiting Your Next CEO” and we discuss for the hour. These are my takeaways:
— 75% CEO leadership turnover expected in 10 years
— search consultant costs about 20-35% of salary
— going on your own takes a lot of time, expertise
— helps to have strategic vision in place before you start recruiting
— he prefers CEO over executive director as title
— think through search committee membership
— lots of tips on resume screening
— interviewing: look for skills and personality
— don’t involve staff in interviewing; it’s full board’s process & decision
— onboarding: expectations; CEO/chair relationship; key stakeholders; more
— hiring resources at nonprofitsearch.com

There’s no show next week. Happy Turkey!

Bon weekend!

We brought back Mitchell Linker on Nonprofit Radio this week! His book is “No One Dreams of Being a Fundraiser.” He and his music are with me for the hour and here are highlights:
— writing a book is a great exercise in reflection
— be a willing mentor to those coming up
— seek a mentor if you are coming up
— use “thank you, but” when a donor preempts your solicitation
— apply context and urgency in your solicitations
— solicitation rejection isn’t personal; you’re talking about the institution
— have back up visits planned for your trips
— work to connect personally with donors

Bon weekend!

The Buy-In Bitches are back on Nonprofit Radio! They’re Carrie Lewis Carlson from CLC Consulting and Lara Koch at Smithsonian Institutions. And "Process Blocking Your Progress?" with Stephanie Zasyatkina with InReach Solutions. Tony’s Takeaways:

Buy-In Bitches
— don’t be put off by an initial “no” from leadership
— be relentless and consistent in your messaging
— cultivate a strong relationship with your boss before you pitch your great idea
— if your idea fails, learn and own it; fight on
— be prepared with supporting data
— be confident
— approach your boss with a solution, not just a problem
— manage down as you wish you were managed down upon

Process Blocking Your Progress?
— start by understanding your workflows
— use process mapping with key stakeholders & leadership
— initiate mapping with manageable chunks, not the whole
— listen for Stephanie’s toast mapping example
— look for pain points to improve efficiency
— you’ll reveal reality vs. how folks think work gets done
— does your work align with mission & values?

Bon weekend!

Bentoism

A thoughtful and smart guest on Nonprofit Radio this week! Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler has a new book, “This Could Be Our Future: A Manifesto for a More Generous World.” We talk about his manifesto for the hour. Highlights:
— financial maximization: the rational choice is the one that makes the most money
— let’s transcend that to values like fairness, faith, family, community, sustainability, lots of others
— bento box spaces: now me, future me, now us & future us
— we’re solely focused on “now me;” use the bento to make your decisions based on broader values
— bentoism is for orgs, too
— 4 decades of financial maximization have given us the mullet economy
— there’s a lot of flexibility in the world; you can make change
— ideas evolve in 30-year increments; he has a good party metaphor for change
— check bentoism.org for how to build your personal or organizational bento

Fabulous show this week with Leah Garcés! She’s president of Mercy For Animals and author of “Grilled: Turning Adversaries Into Allies to Change the Chicken Industry.” Here’s how:
- build trust: it gets you through the rough spots
- walk a mile in their shoes
- give the other side a path to winning
- find common ground
- understand that nothing can be achieved without the opponent’s engagement
- now buy the book! It’s empathic and instructive.

This week we did a romp through Kathleen Kelly Janus’s valuable and thoroughly-researched book, “Social Startup Success: How the Best Nonprofits Launch, Scale Up and Make a Difference.” Get the book! It’s excellent. Here’s what stuck out for me:
— her conclusions are based on surveys and over 100 interviews with the highest-performing orgs
— the challenges are to scale, grow and sustain; to get there, read the book!
— look into and test earned income sources
— have a multi-year fundraising plan
— your leadership needs to be strong & collaborative
— have a robust, active, fundraising board
— be clear about board member expectations
— encourage org-wide, bottom-up storytelling, including beneficiaries

Want to expand your community beyond local and/or online? This week’s Nonprofit Radio will help you. We start with Emma Togni from TechSoup Italia. Then Amy Sample Ward, CEO of NTEN. Here are my takeaways:

Beyond Local: Emma Togni
— look for local expertise where you want to expand to & partner with it
— be multichannel: online & real life
— host social as well as biz-related events
— are corporate sponsorships possible, including local?
— lots of compliance challenges facing nonprofits in Italy
— she wants to see a NTC in Italy
— I tell the story of Mario Bozzi & me watching Aida in Rome

Online To IRL: Amy Sample Ward
— give your local folks autonomy to decide what’s relevant for them
— be the aggregator of content, not the dictator
— invest in & empower your local leaders
— email templates are a valuable resource to help leaders represent you
— also helpful: event formats & help soliciting sponsorships
— if you’re having trouble with FB Live, look at Zoom

5-Minute Planned Giving Marketing & What’s Fair Game? are on Nonprofit Radio this week. The first segment is by me, then it’s Maria Semple, on the ethics of documenting private info you find in the social networks. She’s our prospect research contributor and The Prospect Finder LLC. Here are my takeaways:

5-Minute Planned Giving Marketing
— PG is not only for your wealthy donors
— prerequisites: individual donors & org at least 5 years old
— you need not go beyond revocable gifts
— events: drop a mention in remarks & program
— put a buck slip in your mailings
— put a check-off on reply envelope flaps

What’s Fair Game?
— your donors have the right to see what you have on them
— anything on LinkedIn is fair game for your CRM
— personal info on Facebook: would it compromise your relationship if the donor learned you preserved it?
— we’re balancing personal privacy w/institutional needs
— OK to connect on LinkedIn; don’t friend on Facebook
— corroborate what you find, if you can

Next week:
Amy Sample Ward returns to talk about IRL community building
