More goodness from 19NTC on Nonprofit Radio this week!

First, "Nobody Reads Your PDFs" with Genie Gratto at Gwrites; Meghan Hess from Campaign Legal Center ; and Nathan Gasser with Report Kitchen. Then, “Map Your Data” with Salim Sawaya at Esri. My takeaways:

Genie, Meghan & Nathan
—who is this content for and what do you want them to do with it?
—written reports will turn off some constituencies; look to storytelling
—use metrics to get buy-in from colleagues to consider new formats
—look to work flows to figure out when you can insert creativity
—consider infogram for creating graphics; also Report Kitchen
—informal focus group questioning (anecdata), of your audiences will help

Salim
—visualizing your data will help you learn from it
—using maps you’ll find gaps in service, fundraising, need, impact, etc.
—you need an element of location in your CRM to map
—with geocoding you’ll go from location to dots on a map
—then, what do you want to overlay on top of location for greater context?
—answer the question, “How do we find more people like our X?”

Bon weekend!

05/11/2019

It's another week of 19NTC insights with two great, free resources for nonprofits. First up, it was all about Google Ad Grants with Michael Rasko, Rasko Digital Marketing; Jason King, Google Ad Grant Management by Jason King; and Michelle Hurtado, Google. Then highlights from the 2019 Digital Outlook Report were shared by Elena Francis and Charly Jarrett of hjc and Jennifer Jones Ingram of Care2.

Google Ad Grants:
- Google offers nonprofits up to $10k per month for digital advertising
- Google Ad Grants can help your nonprofit show up higher in search results
- Identifying the best keywords is critical to making your ad grants campaign work
- Think about your org mission when identifying search terms for your campaign
- Develop goals when building your campaign to measure success
- Google offers tools to help launch ad grants campaigns including videos on its YouTube channel
- If you can’t afford an expert to help you set up and optimize your Google Ad Grants account, Google can help match you up with university students building their marketing experience

The 2019 Digital Outlook Report:
- Find the full report on DigitalOutlookReport.com
- Results cover 200 nonprofits representing a cross-section of small to large nonprofits from 170 different countries
- Many nonprofits still don’t know how much to allocate to digital marketing, how much staff they need, or what their strategy is
- Too many nonprofits are still not collaborating internally to produce successful fundraising campaigns
- Many nonprofits are reinventing the wheel with various aspects of their marketing by not documenting information about tools they use and how they’re used
- 60% of new donors are coming in through Facebook
- Use social media, specifically Facebook, as a referral tool instead of a fundraising tool since you won’t be able to get donor data
- Donors increasingly want to give how they want yet 44% of nonprofits are not embracing peer-to-peer fundraising

It’s 19NTC and Maria Semple this week on Nonprofit Radio! Returning guests Dar Veverka from Urban Teachers and Janice Chan with Shift and Scaffold are our NTC panel on Strategic Knowledge Management. Then Maria, The Prospect Finder LLC, shares her wisdom on Ethics In Your Prospect Research. Here’s highlights:

Strategic Knowledge Management
— Knowledge Management gets info to the people who need it, when they need it, in the form they need it
— elements are docs, data, projects, governance, training
— padlet.com for diagramming processes
— shadowing a person is valuable way to document process
— have a shared taxonomy: a consistent language for reference and search
— have a culture of learning & sharing info

Ethics In Your Prospect Research
— aprahome.org has helpful ethics statement & toolkit
— to know net worth, you gotta know liabilities, which are private in credit reports
— donors can look at the data you have on them
— you probably want to stay away from looking at divorce records
— National Council of Nonprofits has lots of sample policies
— there’s a lot more, you need to listen!

It’s “Grit" and "Great Ideas” on Nonprofit Radio this week. Our first panel from #19NTC is Grit: Succeeding As A Woman In Tech. They’re Marisa Lopez, Sara Chieco and Tami Lau from Presence Product Group and Aparna Kothary, from Global Citizen Year. Then, Great Ideas, with Graziella Jackson at Echo&Co and Marcy Rye from Wire Media Let’s takeaway!

Marisa, Sara, Tami & Aparna: Grit: Succeeding As A Woman In Tech
— lots of stories about wage gap, power, compensating where men needn’t, stereotypes
— don’t fight every battle; only where it counts
— find a mentor & be a mentor
— don’t threaten to quit unless you’re ready to
— toot your own horn
— disparities in leadership need to be addressed
— don’t be afraid to ask for help

Graziella & Marcy: Great Ideas
— include all in ideating, not only leadership
— great ideas emanate from a spirit of play, attempting, equality
— everyone doesn’t think well immediately; structure to empower all
— leadership buy-in is essential
— better ideas create cost savings
— the best ideas are often undiscovered

WAVE Web Accessibility Tool

This week on Nonprofit Radio: Be Accessible and Go Bilingual. James Kinser from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Cyndi Rowland with WebAIM open with website accessibility. Then Oliver DelGado from Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles on why you need to look at bilingualism. Here are the highlights:

James & Cyndi: Be Accessible

-- site accessibility helps everyone & improves your SEO outcomes

-- there are accessibility guidelines

-- WebAIM has a free tool at wave.webaim.org

-- format your content with accessibility in mind

-- shortened line length is an example of a change that helps all

-- you’re never done with accessibility implementation

-- buy-in from leadership is critical

Oliver: Go Bilingual
-- look at the demographics of your communities to find secondary languages

-- all your platforms and channels need to be consistent

-- in house or outsource? You need expertise in the culture, not only language

-- give folks the option to receive communications in a different language

-- consider making your ads bilingual

-- make relationships with media in the second language
