Classical-ish with Nutmeg

Classical-ish with Nutmeg Classical-ish is an experimental classical music radio show. I'll play more than just old white dudes.

Classical-ish is an intrepid foray into the genre non-conforming outer edges of the classical universe, where women who make beautiful noise, non-Western modalities, sonic experimentation and composers of color are what’s happening. Join host Nutmeg as she sets out to prove that there’s more to classical music than just old white dudes. We'll be broadcasting from SI Makerspace on alternate Sundays from 10am-12pm starting July 2nd.

As I played this show, I watched a flock or murmuration of elegant small birds, dipping and soaring over the park. They were there a while.

I explored the concept of home in my own cryptic, Romantic, beautiful, weird way and it was perfect for the rain. Enjoy.

Dolly's Wildflowers: live music from the series | Dolly Parton's America | WNYC Studios

This is the best morning-after Thanksgiving show.

Exploring home. While eating breakfast, I had to stop because Kenyan singer Esther Konkara’s version of Dolly Patton’s Wildflowers made me cry.

And I was glad to be done with breakfast by the time one of my favorite artists // BORA YOON came on because I actually exclaimed HOLY SH*T out loud.

These artists in this show are exploring hearth and home and at thanksgiving - a holiday fraught for so many reasons- one can’t help but think of home.

I have found home in fictive kinship. And only recently have I tiptoed into finding a home within myself. To have never been more comfortable here and within, even when home is drafty, confused and full of unmitigated rage haha.

Pour some more coffee and enjoy this as much I am.

While touring the Dollyverse, we bumped into a bunch of amazing musicians not named Dolly. In this bonus ep, we play you a few of the sounds we heard.

If you love electronic music, be grateful for your trans mama and matriarch Wendy Carlos this thanksgiving!

Oof. I was not feeling swell at all this morning (you can def hear it) and my bus was 16 minutes late. But we had decent sound and such a curious and cozy mix of opera and ambient and things in between that I was just jonesin’ to play.

Special thanks to La Violoncelliste for her gorgeous piece Winter and to my dear friend Jay of Scallywag Beats at Makerparkradio.nyc for popping in and opening the studio while I was stuck in public transit purgatory.

La Violoncelliste

When I was in Montreal this week, I did a life drawing session with a beautiful model, charcoal AND the stunning Karine Bouchard playing live improvised cello as the soundtrack to our drawing. I will be playing her piece Winter on the show this Sunday 11/17. I’m so grateful to have met her.

THURSDAY 10/24 - 10am - 12pm ET - I will be having a very special show.

Algerian-French filmmaker Sabrina Jaz and I will be fleshing out her latest project, the remarkable story of her and her Mother and Universal themes inherent in the Mother-daughter relationship.

We will also be telling the story with music from Algeria, France and Sabrina’s other films. Tune in to makerparkradio.nyc .

This was totally the autumn show in so many ways. It was such a joy to do and to go to so many places (and centuries) within the classical genre.

Friends, our gear is so loved up on and you can hear it in the sound on this show. We are deeply passionate about bringing unifying music, art and dialog to the community right now, when people are hating on each other so much and every conversation feels like a minefield. We want to keep elevating you and each other so much.

If you listen and support, thank you and we love you. If you have a bit of extra cash - or a connection to Pioneer, Allan and Heath, Apple, makers of the finest microphones or limiting amplifiers, hit us up at makerparkradio.nyc. We would dearly appreciate your help.

Either way, thanks always for listening and, in the end, we hope we make you happy.

What a fun show today and a cursory exploration of things that are too esoteric for me- for now. We can always learn. Have no shame in your layperson curiosity.

The playlist is lovely and sometimes weird and the sound is drama but pretend you’re listening on FM or used vinyl.

And thanks for your support.

Trigger warning. Content warning.

I know Billie Holiday isn’t exactly classical. But if you don’t know her story and how the racist state targeted and broke her, listen to this and the legacy of her revolutionary anthem Strange Fruit.

Billie Holiday helped shape American popular music with her voice and unique style. But, her legacy extends way beyond music with one song in particular — "Strange Fruit." The song paints an unflinching picture of racial violence, and it was an unexpected hit. But singing it brought serious conseq...

You can hear Reed impart his vast knowledge of gear, the origins of electronic and experimental music and tell some damn good stories. You can hear our fantastic vintage synth and Buchla-laden collaborative playlist. You just can’t hear me during our first of many talking jags because I don’t know why I didn’t flip the mic on ahaha. Worth checking out for sure coz live radio is where it’s at. We had a fantastic time and I can’t thank Reed enough for talking some serious shop and story with me.

At some point this week, I almost asked my esteemed radio bosses if I could take the day off. I’ve been busy and at points, overwhelmed and wasn’t sure I had a show in me. I’m glad I did it, even if the throngs weren’t clamoring to listen. This playlist worked my brain in the best way and I really think it has some stupidly beautiful moments.

Also- I’m pretty pleased with the sound which is everything.
