Classical-ish with Nutmeg

Classical-ish with Nutmeg Classical-ish is an experimental classical music radio show. I'll play more than just old white dudes. Classical-ish is an intrepid foray into the genre non-conforming outer edges of the classical universe, where women who make beautiful noise, non-Western modalities, sonic experimentation and composers of color are what’s happening.

Join host Nutmeg as she sets out to prove that there’s more to classical music than just old white dudes. We'll be broadcasting from SI Makerspace on alternate Sundays from 10am-12pm starting July 2nd.

Barber: Sure on This Shining Night, Op. 13 No. 3 (Arr. Parkin for Cello and Piano)

This is one of my favorite pieces. I remember performing it at Symphony Space maybe? And a woman in the front row was full-on weeping.

The tenderness with which these two play here is worthy of a good weep. Such talent and feeling.

I don’t know how or why I sounded so perky on so little sleep. I think I really enjoy what I play lol- and I had a couple of chill visitors which is a nice departure from the worst pandemic days and no one around.

Latvian composer Domenique Dumont’s 2020 soundtrack to 1930 German silent film Menschen am Sonntag (People on Sunday) perked me up too. And a pretty heartbreaking symphony by Adolphus Hailstork.

Listen here for a female-fronted classical music podcast which features diverse composers and much more interesting, well-thought out commentary and thorough research than my show. 🙂 Loving this episode- gotta break out of my string quartet obsession one of these days!

Huge props to The Daffodil Perspective

On this episode join me as we reinvent the wind quintet canon, listen to a fantasy concert programme with The Journey Upward, plus celebrating Adolphus Hailstork's 80th birthday year and Michiru Oshima's 60th birthday year. Played pieces by Haitian composer Nathalie Joachim and an Afghan piece played by the only all-female orchestra in Afghanistan, Zohra.

Today I donated to Ayiti Community Trust and will be adding links to reputable organizations doing humanitarian work in Haiti and Afghanistan in the coming days.

And I misspoke! I referred to cellist and composer Redi Hasa as Persian when he’s actually Albanian.

I’m a puddle. This is beautiful.

I’m a lifelong Peter Gabriel and Genesis fan. I love that Peter Gabriel could have easily spent his life as a cloistered and wealthy toff because of the privilege he was born into but he uses his position and power to lift up others. Happy birthday to him.

I’m really into today’s playlist. It’s diverse and covers a lot of geography, a few centuries and some liminal spaces in the classical universe for sure!

It’s been hard putting shows out in these scary, historic days, with a fulltime job and generally busy life. I think you can hear the strain and also the joy coz I wouldn’t give it up for anything.

Also, pardon the dark. It’s easier for me to see the gear that way.

Nice to be back in the studio! I played a show of music inspired by birds since I’ve had a young mockingbird adopt me recently.

Someone asked me why I don’t like to play old white guys. I def play old white guys and listen to them too, for decades now. They get lots of representation in classical music (and everywhere!) so I prefer to play people who don’t get heard and recognized as much. Lots of women, q***r peeps and non-white folks compose classical music too and it’s fun to play and discover them all.
