Coogan's NYC

As we approach the anniversary of September 11th, let me share this remembrance and give a heartfelt shout out to our Northern Manhattan community. We lost many wonderful people on that day.

I’d like to tell the story of one particularly young man, who was very special to us.

In the late spring/early summer of 2001, one from Inwood, Brendon, made a suggestion to another man from Inwood, myself, Dave. The suggestion was that I hire a young man. He said to me, “Can you do the lad a favor and get him a job until his apprenticeship calls him in to start work.”

This lad, Brian Monaghan, worked at Coogan’s in the summer of 2001. He was looking forward to beginning an apprenticeship as a carpenter, which officially began at the World Trade Center on September 10th. September 11th was his second day.

Community and small business are so much more than what you see. It’s about the relationships and the people who make our lives worthwhile. Of all the people we lost that day, we have a special place in our hearts for Brian and will remember him fondly forever.

- Dave Hunt, Coogan's NYC

Inwood on the Rocks: Taverns, Speakeasies & Bars
Tuesday September 5th at 7:30 PM

Greetings!

This month LOST INWOOD presents a neighborhood drinking history sure to shock and astound. Our co-founder Cole Thompson will lead the way as we travel through time on a pub-crawl of Inwood's historic watering holes. In the 1700s we'll pull up a seat the Black Horse Tavern near the present day intersection of Dyckman and Broadway and have a glass of Kill-Devil Rum. Then maybe we'll swing into the Schultheis Fort George Casino for a pint of George Ehret's signature Bock beer of a century ago. After that we may just stagger down to the Mad Dot Boat Club; an infamous Dyckman Street prohibition era speakeasy where wiseguy Roy Sloane was put on the spot by a sedan full of gun-toting gangsters.

And if we're still on our feet, we'll stop in at any of the 100 Irish bars that used to dot Inwood, all with stories to tell.

So stop by and raise a glass with us this Tuesday September 5th 7:30PM at the Indian Road Cafe. It's a free event, open to the public. Hope to see you there!

Reservations highly recommended. Call us at 212/942-7451.

Uptown Stories

Enrollment for Uptown Stories fall semester is now open with classes in #screenwriting, #fiction and #poetry for #kids.

Hi folks,

We'll be opening up early enrollment for the fall semester this coming Tuesday, August 8th, but meanwhile, here's a sneak preview of our fall schedule.

You'll notice that the incredible Glendaliz Camacho is taking over "The Elements of Fiction" on Tuesday afternoons. I'll be teaching a new workshop, "What Do You Have to Say for Yourself?", on the personal essay, as well as the open-genre "It's Your Thing." Bobby DeJesus will be back from a triumphant summer debut with "Screenwriting." Josh Bayer will return with "POW! Writing and Drawing Comics," now at a slightly later time. Shamie Cuthbert will bring the magic back with "Creating Otherworlds." And the indomitable Jane LeCroy will teach young writers the fun and play of language in "The Game of Poetry."

As always, tuition is pay-what-you-can!

Feel free to reach out with questions, but stay tuned for more information and a chance to register this Tuesday!

Best,
Kate
