This morning I witnessed the importance of proofreading emails before sending them. A colleague of mine sent an email to a client and continually misspelled her name throughout the message. Before I could alert him, she sent a "reply all" email to correct him, and she did not sound happy.

Before sending any copy - whether it's in an email, a text message, or a document, it's essential to review it for typos and accuracy. Your editorial practices are a reflection on you and your work ethic. A typo-free message shows you took the time to review the copy before sending it. Isn't that why the spell check feature was invented?

When it comes to people's names (especially the names of clients or bosses), it's even more important to get the spelling right. Likewise with job titles. It's simply a sign of respect - something everyone should exhibit in the workplace every day.

On and every day, take time out to engage with others and really listen to what they have to say. Express empathy whenever possible, be heartfelt in your responses, and let people know that they are valued and that their voices are heard. Even when life becomes hectic, it's important to slow down and listen up!

I'm experiencing a high right now. No, not that kind of high! I'm referring to what I like to call a "corporate high" - when you encounter an employee who truly gets the mission of the organization they work for.

Today I had the pleasure of interviewing a staff member for an e-newsletter I'm working on for a client. He's organizing a wonderful conference (in conjunction with Men's Health Month) designed to enhance the independence and self-esteem of individuals with developmental disabilities. He wants them to know that the sky's the limit in what they can achieve, and listening to him, it's obvious they have the support and encouragement to accomplish great things in life!

This employee's passion for his work truly came through during our interview. In an industry facing budget cuts, low wages, and staffing challenges, here is someone who loves what does - not because of a paycheck, but because he finds the work rewarding with many opportunities to put smiles on people's faces. That is what keeps him coming to work for the past 10 years.

His positive attitude is one everyone should have, and I suspect it will propel him to move up the career ladder. Meeting future leaders is always exciting to me since they tend to stand out like a beautiful rose, and they keep on blooming to help drive their organization forward.
