The things they don’t tell you about cancer recovery…

Anne has developed cording after radiation, which is causing a lot of tightness and pain. This tactile vest is her newest accessory, designed to help with the swelling and tissue changes she’s dealing with.

They came right to our home to fit her and teach her how to use it, which was pretty incredible. ❤️

Treatment may be over, but apparently cancer recovery has a whole wardrobe of its own.

So… we’re making it fashion.

A huge thanks to Tactile Medical Medical for coming to us for the fitting, it’s a nice break from the countless appointments.

One of the most frustrating things about building an LGBTQ+ family is how much we’re expected to just… know. Know that being on a birth certificate might not be enough. Know that a donor agreement matters. Know that the laws change depending on where you live. Know which documents you need to protect your family.

But how are we supposed to know what no one ever told us?

That’s why I wanted to have this conversation with LGBTQ+ family law attorney Rachel Levy.

We shouldn’t have to take extra steps to protect our families. But as long as we do, we need to make sure we’re telling each other what those steps are.

If there’s an LGBTQ+ parent in your life, send them this post. They may already know all of this. But I’d rather we tell each other twice than find out too late.

And if you’ve learned something about protecting your family that you wish someone had told you sooner, add it below. Let’s make the comments a resource, too. ❤️

When we finally completed our second-parent adoption, I didn’t need a judge to tell me we were a family. I already knew that. And that’s why I loved the way LGBTQ+ family law attorney Rachel Levy described these legal proceedings in our conversation:

For some families, they’re a celebration. For others? It’s the DMV. You do the paperwork. You show up. You get the thing you need. And you’re relieved when it’s done.

Because the big day wasn’t the day a judge legally recognized your family.

The big day was when your child became yours.

And I think both reactions are completely valid.

LGBTQ+ parents who’ve been through this: how did it feel for you? Did you celebrate—or was it more DMV?

And if you know an LGBTQ+ parent who needs to hear this—or needs to know why second-parent/confirmatory adoption matters—send this their way.

If you have an LGBTQ+ family—or love someone who does—please share this one. ❤️

Because there are legal steps many of us don’t even know we’re supposed to take to protect our families.

Confirmatory adoption. Known donor agreements. Surrogacy protections. Estate planning. Name changes and legal documents for trans family members. And the laws can look completely different depending on where you live.

LGBTQ+ family law attorney Rachel Levy joined me to help us understand what we actually need to know—and what we can DO.

And amidst all the terrifying headlines, Rachel reminded me of something I really needed to hear:

There is good news, too.

Protections are being strengthened at the state level. People are doing the work. And knowing our rights is one of the ways we protect each other.

Dolly was playing and apparently we were having feelings with dinner last night. 😭 Anne is his non-bio mom. And I think about moments like this whenever people try to reduce parenthood to biology.

He didn’t know how to explain what he was feeling. He just knew he missed his mom. ❤️

Anyway, thanks Dolly. We were just trying to make dinner. 😂

True story. The teacher didn’t stop him so I did. Don’t mess with me 😝.

I think there’s a particular pressure that can come with LGBTQ+ parenting. When you’ve spent generations being told that people like you shouldn’t have children—or that kids somehow need to be protected from families like ours—there can be this extra pressure to prove them wrong.

To raise amazing kids.
To have the happy family.
To get it RIGHT.

But maybe proving we’re worthy of parenthood was never supposed to be the job.

I loved this realization from my conversation with Vikram: parenting is messy. We mess up. We repair. Our kids get to see that grown-ups mess up, too.

Our families don’t need to be perfect to prove anything to anyone. We’ve earned the right to be messy, too.

But I’m curious: Do you think LGBTQ families are expected to prove themselves in ways straight families aren’t?

I want to hear what you think in the comments. And share this with another parent who might need the reminder. ❤️

My daughter and I went up to our roof deck to watch the Empire State Building light up for Dolly last night at 9:25 (9 to 5). Of course I had to serenade her with her song. The world was not ready to lose her. I am shook to the core about losing her. Like many, I never met her but I feel like she raised me. Her music certainly did, and her spirit… Lordy lord, this feels heavy. Hang in there folks, and look for the rainbows. Dolly would want it that way.

Rest in peace diva angel. I will always love you. Thank you for blessing us with your beauty.
