Pioneer of the 'musique concrète' genre, Pierre Henry passed away yesterday. Starting in the 1940's, along with his lifetime collaborator Pierre Schaeffer, he used field recordings, locked grooves and tape loops to formulate the earliest methods in sampling.
Henry was set to perform on December 10th, for his 90th anniversary, a brand new work commissioned by the Maison de la radio in Paris. His work remains a foundational pillar of contemporary music.
