"Your va**na and stomach are in a world of pain. More often than not, there’s been a cut somewhere. You struggle to get comfortable in that hard hospital bed. You can barely sit, stand, lie down, or walk. A picture really is worth 1,000 words. This is me, roughly 24 hours after giving birth. I have no idea who took the picture, but you can tell how I feel just by looking at it."

"It was 4 a.m. and 39 degrees outside. You were cold and all alone. 'Can you feel for any parts of the baby?' You yelled out that you could feel her head! My heart broke for you. Those precious cries are something I will never forget."

"I felt my blood boiling. 'Was this your plan all along? Mooch off me while you do NOTHING all day.' He followed me into the bedroom. Nothing could have prepared me. I felt an instant, excruciating pain. ‘You will never have a penny from me, you pathetic gold-digger,’ he said."

"When I crossed the street carrying her - she can’t walk without the use of her walker - a man yelled at me from 30 feet away. I got inches from his face, with my daughter in my arms, and quietly asked him if he was referring to my daughter. 'Hell yes,' he said."

“I was excited and ready to meet our baby girl! I realized something was not right. I said, 'What is happening?' Why is my husband so confused and scared? Why can't my mom look at me? Why did my doctor step out? No one said a word. The silence tore me apart. I finally got a glimpse of Bella and... she looked 'different.'”

"I was 20, homeless, and spiraling out of control. I never imagined myself as 'that girl' who got pregnant. I'd known the father for a month and had no clear future ahead of me. 'I'm so sorry I could not be ready for you,' I kept telling my son. 48 hours. That is how long he was ours. I wanted this stranger in my stomach to have a chance at life."

"The redness was spreading down his neck. When he woke at 6 a.m. I screamed to my husband, 'Get in the car!' His eye was so swollen the white part was bulging out from between his eyelid and his iris was obscured. He felt hot to the touch. A temperature check revealed a raging fever."

“The Army told Jason it was time to move, but she wasn’t legally free. With tears in his eyes, he wrapped me in his arms and said, ‘We’re ripping our family to shreds trying to keep it together. But we can’t leave her.’ The boys hadn’t even heard what we decided; they simply rallied to their sister. They humbled me right down to my core.”
