✨Hohenzollern Castle or Burg Hohenzollern, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Hohenzollern Castle is the seat of the imperial House of Hohenzollern.
Built between 1850 and 1867, it is the third of the three hilltop castles constructed on the site. The first castle dates back to the early 11th century while the second was built between 1454 and 1461.
Architect Friedrich August Stüler designed the present castle influenced by the English Gothic revival architecture and the Loire Valley Châteaux.
The castle is a monument to German Romanticism.
It covers almost all of Mount Hohenzollern's summit. It is composed of four primary parts: military architecture such as the Eagle Gate and its attached drawbridge, the palatial buildings, chapels and the gardens.
It was damaged by an earthquake in 1978 and was under repair until the mid-1990s.
It is a stunning privately-owned architectural masterpiece open to the public.
Since 1952, the Princess Kira of Prussia Foundation has used it for an annual summer camp for children.
Whenever Prince Georg Friedrich Ferdinand of Prussia, Head of the House of Hohenzollern, and his family are staying there, the Prussian flag flies over the castle.

🌟🏰 Vianden Castle in Luxembourg.

Built in romanesque style in the 11th century it was later expanded to include a keep, a residential palace and a chapel to reflect the might of the Counts of Vianden who made it their seat till the 15th century. The castle is one of the largest west of Rhine. It stands on the site of a Roman castellum and combines romanesque, gothic and renaissance architectural styles added throughout its long history. In the 18th century it was however sold piece by piece, later abandoned and started falling apart. In the middle of the 20th century the owner ceded it to Luxembourg and proper restoration began that allowed in the long run to restore the castle to its former glory and open it to the public.

Golub castle is a four-wing conventual Teutonic castle from built in 13th-14th c. on a hill overlooking the town. Interestingly, in 1409–1411, part of the Teutonic army gathered here before setting off to the Grunwald battle when the united Polish Lithiuanian army crushed the Teutonic order. The local commander Nicolaus Roder was one of the two hundred brother knights who died during the battle. It is here that the first to***co plantations in Poland appeared. One of the first Polish medieval reenactments was organized here in 1977. According to a legend, during the Polish-Swedish wars, the Golub castle had a secret underground passage under river Drwęca, which led to the castle in Radziki Duże, which is now a ruin. When the Swedes took Golub, the residents of the city fled while the passage was sealed off with a huge stone that fell into the river and broke the roof of the tunnel.

Beaumaris Castle sits perfectly symmetrical on its watery moat, its concentric stone walls bristling with stout round towers and stout gatehouses that guard the single bridge entrance. Inside, an open central courtyard is ringed by a lofty inner curtain pierced with tall lancet windows and capped by a great hall’s steep-pitched roof. The layered defenses—from the outer basal wall to the inner enceinte’s battlements—speak to the meticulous precision of its unfinished design, while the surrounding tidal flats and nearby town hint at both its maritime strategic importance and enduring, brooding grandeur.

Château de Commarque is a hillside castle located between Sarlat and Les Eyzies in the Dordogne department in southern France. Its prominence was given a boost in 1915 when a prehistoric cave of Commarque was found in the cliff that supports the castle. The cave has 150 engravings made some 15,000 years ago. One of the most famous is the Engraving of a horse. Back in the 12th century Chateau de Commarque was only a wooden tower. Its key task was to ensure the safety of the valley and guard the crossing of two important commercial roads. In the 15th century it was seized by the English forces, the last castellan died there in 1656 and the site was abandoned. In 1968, Hubert de Commarque, a descendant of the original family, bought the ruins of the castle entirely covered by vegetation. He managed to consolidate the most damaged parts and carried out preservation and conservation works.

Montsoriu castle in Catalonia, Spain was built in the 11th century as a watch tower on a hill. In the 11th - 12th centuries it became the seat of the Viscounts of Girona and subsequently of Cabrera. 200 years later it was turned into a Gothic palace of the Viscounts who also made it one of their most important fortresses. During that time it witnessed several attacks – but it was a hard nut to crack. The castle was not easy to access, enjoyed a system of walls and - most importantly - it boasted an advanced water supply system. Its defenders were not scared by a potential lengthy siege as there was enough water in a huge central cistern and 3 additional ones placed across the castle. The fortress also gave shelter to locals in case of danger.

An imposindepartment of France. The castle it belongs to was built in the 13th century by the bishops of Soissons. The 45m high keep is almost the only intact structure which is left of the castle. Interestingly, in 1835 world famous French writer Victor Hugo visited the keep and even left a small piece of graffiti on a wall inside it. The bishops left the castle around the 17th century. Later it was abandoned and fell into ruins. In the mid 19th century it underwent large-scale restoration but then the Great War came. In 1918 the castle came under fire and the bombs caused a lot of damage.

🇦🇹🏰 Fischhorn Castle – A Historic Gem Amid the Stunning Scenery of Salzburg, Austria

Tucked away in the lush hills near Zell am See, Fischhorn Castle (Schloss Fischhorn) is a fairytale-like fortress with a dramatic and fascinating past. First mentioned in the 13th century, it was destroyed during the peasant revolts of 1526 and later rebuilt in the 19th century in neo-Gothic style. During World War II, it was occupied by the N***s, and Hermann Göring – one of the top N**i leaders – was captured here in 1945. Today, after careful restoration, the castle serves as an exclusive venue for private events, weddings, and retreats. Though not open to the general public, its majestic presence and scenic surroundings make it a captivating sight for anyone exploring the region.

Ortenberg Castle (Schloss Ortenberg), located in the Baden-Württemberg region of Germany near the town of Offenburg, is a picturesque 19th-century neo-Gothic castle built on the site of a much older medieval fortress. Originally constructed in the 11th century to protect the nearby city and the Kinzig Valley, the castle was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over the centuries. The current romantic-style structure, with its tall turrets, crenellated towers, and red sandstone walls, was designed by Friedrich Eisenlohr in the mid-1800s. Surrounded by vineyards and overlooking the Black Forest, Ortenberg Castle now serves as a youth hostel and a popular tourist destination, celebrated for its fairy-tale charm and panoramic views of the Rhine Valley.

Dunrobin Castle, located in the Scottish Highlands near Golspie, is one of Scotland's most enchanting and historically rich castles. Dating back to the early 14th century, it has served as the ancestral home of the powerful Earls and later Dukes of Sutherland.
