ART INSPIRED IN QUARANTINE: RYAN MCNAMARA, “I worked with nine performers who are currently scattered across the globe. These are people I’ve worked with for over a decade. It was a nice way to check in with extended family during quarantine. I rehearsed with each of them for three hours via FaceTime. The choreography involves the performers touching their own body. By layering the footage, I could have the performers touch each other, if only on your monitor. The screen becomes a petri dish of forbidden connection.”

In the first days of May, the Covid-19 pandemic had us all at a standstill, stuck indoors waiting patiently for news.
Mary and I decided to use our car as a mobile studio to drive around documenting our friends and their friends from afar.
Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Far Rockaway, Manhattan and upstate NY.
We packed lunch, some snacks, a hot thermos, plenty of masks, and my camera.
Pulling up and driving by everyones house’s, apt buildings, storefronts, and farms was a window into everyone’s lives
during lockdown. It was a genuine exchange of love and affection and A good feeling to say “hey how ya doing, how you holding up.” Everyone shared their story and it was nice to listen - spending a few minutes together in a very bizarre moment in time, was very comforting. These photographs are portraits of people we love and respect. It was great to see everyone and thanks for stepping outside. Thank you so much for being apart.

TIONA NEKKIA MCCLODDEN recounts her personal experience with the criminal justice system. “I was arrested three years ago when a man (white) I maced in self-defense called the police. I was immediately jailed for almost two days, charged with a felony, ordered to get my own lawyer and get ready for trial. My lawyer was able to present my artist CV to gain acceptance to the ARD program, and I was then sat in a private session before the judge, the district attorney and his team with my lawyer and told that if I did not sign the paperwork to enter the program the judge would prosecute me at the highest judgment for my charges which was 3-5 years imprisonment. I had no choice due to my limited funds and was given two years probation which came with a hefty monthly fee, but far less than what my trial would have cost. I am a victim of railroading within the criminal justice system. Railroading is what happens to first time offenders who are pushed recklessly through the criminal justice system without any thought or delay. The criminal justice system in Philadelphia often “railroads” young, black and poc first-time offenders through a straight to prison pipeline with no hope whatsoever of fair treatment or reprieve. I could have easily gone straight to prison, had I not been accepted to the ARD (accelerated rehabilitative disposition) program. It was one of the most fearful times of my life.” PUSHA T is an American rapper and record executive who is very vocal about mass incarceration and its effect on “my demographic, my people, my culture.”

In Honor of #worldaidsday we celebrate the talent of Juan Botas, one of our fist and greatest contributors, whose life was cut short by AIDS at only 34 in 1992. This rare talent was sadly One of Millions. He added life, humor, and passion to our fledgling issues, all while fighting the battle of his life. He drew from recurring themes of his native Spain, often featuring The Matador, both with respect and eroticism. He died the night before our 2nd issue was released, yet left enough compelling work to be featured in our 7th issue.
