New Wage Scam in Saudi Arabia: Sponsors Delay Salaries, Forcing Workers into Informal Money Deals

A new kind of labour scam is reportedly spreading in Saudi Arabia where migrant workers are being systematically deprived of their rightful wages by their sponsors (kafeels), who delay salary payments to exploit their financial vulnerability.

According to testimonies from affected workers, some kafeel sponsors receive salary payments from companies on time but intentionally delay transferring that money to the workers—sometimes for up to two months. Workers are falsely told, “The company hasn't paid yet,” when in reality, the kafeel is holding the funds.

Facing urgent needs—like sending money back home or covering medical emergencies—many workers are forced to “sell” their unpaid salaries at discounted rates. A worker revealed that a day’s wage worth 12 riyals is often sold for just 9 riyals due to desperation.

This has given rise to an informal, exploitative money market run by middlemen and kafeels, who profit from the suffering of poor migrant workers. Rights groups describe this as a new form of economic and psychological abuse within the existing kafala system.

Human rights activists are urging both the Saudi authorities and labour-sending countries to investigate and take strong legal action against this exploitative system.
