Happy publication day to Fernando A. Flores’s VALLEYESQUE! Swinging between satire and surrealism, grief and joy, #Valleyesque is a boundary- and border-pushing collection from a one-of-a-kind stylist and voice. "These are marvelously unpredictable stories, anchored by Fernando A. Flores’s deadpan prose and his surefooted navigation of those overlapping territories, the real and the fantastic, where so much of the best contemporary fiction now lives." —Kelly Link, author of #GetInTrouble

Farrar, Straus and Giroux is proud to announce the foundation of the FSG Writer’s Fellowship. This year-long program is designed to give an emerging writer from an underrepresented community additional resources to build a life around writing: funding, editorial guidance, and advice on how to forge a writing career. The fellowship celebrates the spirit of the FSG list and its commitment to invention, curiosity, and extending the limits of literature. Mitzi Angel, president and publisher of FSG, says, “I’m delighted to announce the FSG writer’s fellowship, a program in keeping with our longtime commitment to thrilling new voices. I look forward to welcoming the fellow to the FSG community and providing them with a unique opportunity for artistic growth.”

The judges for the 2022 FSG Writer’s Fellowship are Sheila Heti, Katie Kitamura, and Rowan Ricardo Phillips. Interested individuals can apply starting April 1, 2022 and the deadline to apply is April 15. More information about the fellowship can be found at https://fsgfellowship.com/. The winner will be announced in August and the Fellowship will begin in September.

Acid West: Essays

"Welcome to the trippy valleys of southern New Mexico, where one can experience close encounters with a post-Snowden UFO convention, a family's harrowing trials as atomic "downwinders," a desert scavenger hunt for cartridges of one of the worst video games ever made. Your guide: a loquacious wordsmith à la David Foster Wallace."

O, The Oprah Magazine recommends Joshua Wheeler's ACID WEST as a top book for the summer!

THE SAVAGE

Frank Bill's propulsive and horrifying second novel, THE SAVAGE, is here! Says Alan Heathcock, author of VOLT: "With The Savage we find Frank Bill at the height of his powers, penning a burning hot epic both thrilling and necessary, with depth of ambition and imagination, salt-of-the-earth characters to love and fear, all brought to life with searing prose both brutal and beautiful."

Samantha Hunt’s imagination runs wild in 'The Dark Dark'

"'The Dark Dark' specializes in women grappling with the limits of domesticity, trying to regain some sense of who they are and what they have lost . . . a daring collection in which Hunt gives her imagination free reign, allowing her characters to careen off the rails in their search for something more in the darkness."

Check out Los Angeles Times Books's review of Samantha Hunt's latest.

Samantha Hunt's strange and wonderful sensibility is on display in her short story collection, 'The Dark Dark.'

It's not too late to check out Eugene Lim's masterful, fleet-footed novel DEAR CYBORGS, "an unusual book now drawing the sorts of critical accolades that should vault him into the first rank of American writers."

Review: ‘The Dark Dark,’ Beguiling Tales of Women in Metamorphosis

“Beguiling . . . daring . . . Hunt at her best is a lot like the uncle of one character, who is described as ‘so good at imagining things’ that ‘he makes the imagined things real.’ Hunt’s dreamlike images operate in service to earthbound ideas . . . [She] gets at the myriad ways women work to keep their self-possession in the face of social and interpersonal expectations.”

THE DARK DARK gets some love from The New York Times.

In this short-story collection by Samantha Hunt, dreamlike images operate in service to feminist themes and earthbound ideas.

How Researching Boredom Prepared Me for Marriage

"This is one handy thing about knowing how common boredom is: It’s less sinister once you know that it’s something that happens in every relationship from time to time."

YAWN author Mary Mann writes about monogamy, spicing up sex, and relationship boredom for New York Magazine.

It's possible to turn the monotony of monogamy to your advantage.

How to Turn Boredom into a Performance Enhancer

"Admitting that you get bored while running feels like failure of a sort, tantamount to admitting that you don’t really love running—maybe even that you’ll never be all that good at it. But what makes elites so good isn’t that they magically don’t get bored; it’s that they’ve learned to be with that boredom, pay attention to it, and work their way through it to a feeling that’s really worth running for."

Mary Mann tells you how to channel your restlessness (and maybe enjoy running) in an essay for Outside Magazine.

An entire industry is built around trying to curb the feeling of boredom while running. But if you can endure that feeling of irritation and restlessness for just a bit, you may find yourself, as they say, in the zone.

The Virtues of Boredom

"People do talk about boredom so much as a privilege, and it’s like, you’re just not thinking. Look at people on factory assembly lines, look at people in refugee camps, their lives are not luxurious by any means, but they’re dealing with these very boring conditions and they still want purpose in their lives."

Read Mary Mann's engrossing interview in this month's The Atlantic about boredom, depression, privilege, and Tinder.

What’s going on under the surface when people feel bored?

Kick off February with these new releases! 📚 Happy publication day to EATING TO EXTINCTION by Dan Saladino, DILLA TIME by Dan Charnas, THEN THE WAR by Carl Phillips, and STRING FOLLOW by Simon Jacobs! 🍲 Dan Saladino's EATING TO EXTINCTION is the prominent broadcaster’s pathbreaking tour of the world’s vanishing foods and his argument for why they matter now more than ever. From an Indigenous American chef refining precolonial recipes to farmers tending Geechee red peas on the Sea Islands of Georgia, the individuals profiled in this book are essential guides to treasured foods and provide a roadmap to a food system that is healthier, more robust, and, above all, richer in flavor and meaning. 🎶 Equal parts biography, musicology, and cultural history, DILLA TIME chronicles the life and legacy of J Dilla, a musical genius who transformed the sound of popular music for the twenty-first century. From MCD x FSG this is the story of the man and his machines, his family, friends, partners, and celebrity collaborators. 📖 THEN THE WAR is a new collection of poems from one of America’s most essential, celebrated, and enduring poets, Carl Phillips. This collection is luminous testimony to the power of self-reckoning and to Phillips as an ever-changing, necessary voice in contemporary poetry. 🧵 And from FSG Originals, STRING FOLLOW is a darkly comic suburban Gothic about a malevolent force that targets a group of Ohio misfits, harnessing their angst for its sinister designs. Simon Jacobs blends the startlingly original and the uncannily familiar, revealing the dark chaos that lurks beneath the surface of Midwestern suburbia.

At a Dinner Party for White (Wo)men [T]he other plates are creatively imagined vaginas…The Sojourner Truth plate is the only one in the collection that shows—instead of a vagina—a face. Alice Walker, in response to Judy Chicago’s 1970 exhibit The Dinner Party ____________ Everyone else is invited to meet their vaginas— different denominations and colors— except me, the magical negress. My box always absent because desire is not a privilege for disenfranchised women descendent from slaves— we, still, their dark continent. They cannot imagine my yawning l***a because I do not pink at their touch, cannot imagine me wet when I want to be, decidedly igniting follicles on my body. At best, undressed, I am invisible, neutered, neutral— a breast-faced mammy assuaging centuries of shame with archetypical depictions of tears and rage— a place at the table they refuse to learn to set. ____________ Join Chet'la Sebree in conversation with Shara McCallum for a celebration of Field Study (FSG Originals) tonight at 7:30 PM EDT This event is co-hosted by the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History(Crowdcast)
