Our Origin Story
Diagonal Media was founded by Blake Drummond in 2015. Blake started his career in media production working behind the scenes on shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, 30 Rock, and Ugly Betty. His skill and dedication allowed him to quickly work his way up to become the production coordinator on the hit show White Collar.
After 8 years of working in TV & Feature Film Production offices, Blake knew he needed to make a change. The vision of being a “creative” in the industry was slowly disappearing, so he decided to leave the logistics side of TV and Film and start his own path as a producer/cinematographer.
Blake spent years working on any filming job he could to hone and perfect his craft. It started with weddings and events, and transitioned into an opportunity to film a CEO presentation at an advertising holding company.
Blake’s experience as a production coordinator taught him the importance of professionalism, accountability, efficiency, and timeliness. These skills, and mindset, turned out to be the special sauce that would set him apart from others in the booming video industry. This job led to the next, and the next, until it got so busy that he needed help editing all of the content - so he reached out on a Final Cut Pro X user group looking for editors in NYC.
This is when he met Garrett Kafchinski. Garrett had been freelancing in New York similarly to Blake, filming and editing. His love of the technical side of filmmaking led him to work as an Avid Technician for Pivotal Post and as a Digital Imaging Technician on several shorts and features including Ira Sachs’ Little Men.
Blake and Garrett hit it off with their ability to both shoot and edit with Blake handling more pre-production, and Garrett handling more post-production.
Blake hired his first full time employee, Jonah Crespi, in 2017 and hired Garrett full time in January 2018. A few months later he asked Garrett to come on as a full time partner. This concept of having two people fully devoted and committed to growing the business has been what has accelerated Diagonal’s growth. From purchasing gear to hiring talent to focusing on marketing, Blake and Garrett work as a team to figure out the best ways to serve clients and grow the business.
It started with filming simple presentations, but has now expanded to broadcasting live streams, traveling globally to cover corporate conferences, and producing same-day content. It has led to Diagonal Media being able to produce its own shows such as ‘The In Crowd,’ ‘Good News,’ ‘Every Day I Die A Little’ and ‘DGNL Tips.’
Another one of Diagonal Media’s secret weapons is DGNL’s Chief Creative Officer, Dan Yund. From aesthetically streamlined lower thirds, to designs for complex animations, Dan brings an acute sensibility and tastefulness to each project.
One key of Diagonal Media’s success, as Blake always says, is having a can-do attitude and “treating everyone like a CEO.” All clients deserve the utmost respect; and people always remember if you are professional and courteous.
