When Formula 1 racing car designer Gordon Murray wanted to build the ultimate road car, his boss Ron Dennis at McLaren gave free rein to the project. The result was the groundbreaking McLaren F1 that arrived in 1992, and was the first production car to feature a carbon fibre monocoque chassis.

The McLaren F1 was also notable for its three-seater layout with central driving position, and for using gold as engine bay insulation - although the few hundred pounds worth of precious metal paled into significance against the car’s half-a-million pound price tag.

That doesn’t sound a lot when you consider top modern hypercars seldom cost less than £1m, but at the time it was more than double the price of the Bugatti EB110 GT and a fair chunk more than Jaguar’s XJ220. On the road, the McLaren F1 blew both into the weeds. It was an engineering feat that completely moved the goalposts for hypercars and set a new benchmark for performance.

Its 6.1-litre V12 engine makes 618bhp, and took the McLaren F1 to an officially timed 243mph in March 1998. It was a new world record that wasn’t beaten until the Bugatti Veyron cracked 253mph in 2005.Best Hypercars 2022 !!

Frangivento's latest Asfané supercar has 996 horsepower, no fish tank.

In 2017, an Italian firm by the name of Frangivento unveiled an oddball supercar concept complete with a built-in fish tank.

The company has now unveiled a follow-up, this one claimed to be a prototype closer in spec to an envisaged production model, and sadly the fish tank is no more.

What you get instead is a hybrid powertrain claimed to generate a peak 996 horsepower, or 10 horses more than the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, Italy's other hybrid supercar. The car also boasts aluminum and carbon fiber construction and gullwing doors.

Frangivento unveiled the prototype, dubbed the Asfanè DieciDieci, on May 30 at a private event held in Turin, Italy. There, the company revealed that the car packs a 5.4-liter turbocharged V-10 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic to power the rear wheels and two electric motors to power the front wheels.

The DieciDieci portion of the name, Italian for “TenTen,” is a reference to the 996 peak hp rating, which is 1,010 in the metric horsepower figures used in Italy.

Speaking with La Stampa at the reveal, Frangivento founder Paolo Mancini said the company has already received expressions of interest from potential customers in China, Italy and Middle East. Pricing hasn't been set but, depending on the specification, could reach up to $2.25 million.

Surprise! The Pagani Zonda has returned. First baked in Pagani’s (still active) autoclave in the late Nineties, Horacio’s original supercar simply refuses to die. We’re good with that, tbh, because this is the latest ‘new’ Zonda, the Zun.

We’re only dealing with renders currently, so we’re guessing the Zun is yet to be built. When it is, it’ll be one of the wildest ones yet. It’s quite purple, a similar shade to the one Lewis Hamilton picked for his 760LH years ago.

This Zun gains some custom carbon nostrils, new carbon air extractors and a carbon fibre arrowhead nose plus a carbon aero package including special canards and a splitter.

And though there is no roof, there is a scoop similar to the Cinque Roadster that works its way back to a carbon fin and full length rear wing with a smaller, purple wing below. Observant viewers will notice new, larger carbon air pods protruding from the flanks to keep that 7.3-litre AMG-sourced naturally-aspirated V12 engine breathing.

Confused as to why there are so many ‘new’ Zondas? Yes, only 136 were originally built, but Pagani will still build you one by modifying an existing chassis. In fact, one of the latest trends is customers asking for one of the very first original Zonda chassis to modify… and then buying another one to fit their own tastes. The Zun is one of these.
