The European Central Bank's latest Bank Lending Survey reveals a continued sharp decline in loan demand from both firms and households during the third quarter of 2023.

Eurozone banks tightened credit standards more than initially anticipated in Q3, accompanied by a notable drop in net loan demand compared to banks' expectations. TLDR: the combination of higher interest rates and a deteriorating economic environment creates an unfavourable environment for credit markets.

The convergence of weak PMI data and stricter credit standards strengthens the case for the ECB to maintain its policy rates on hold tomorrow.

3.7 million Australian households face food insecurity, Foodbank Australia’s Hunger Report

In the last 12 months, 3.7 million households in Australia have faced food insecurity, which is the equivalent to more than the number of households in Sydney and Melbourne combined, according to the Foodbank Australia Hunger Report 2023.

But what led to 37 percent of the country facing moderate to severe insecurity? “It’s a combination of a number of factors. Being on aged pensions, taking in our granddaughter and great grand daughter due to family violence issues, depletion of any savings and using credit cards to pay for increased expenses like insurances, utilities and clothing,” explained Foodbank Australia.

ANALYSTS PREDICT S&P RANGE 4000-4500 in 2023-2030.

The analysts attribute this projection to the high price-to-earnings ratio and modest 2024 earnings, as well as an anticipated normalized 5-6% yield on 10-year U.S. Treasuries in the mid-2020s, which could exert pressure on P/E ratios.

“We see a “Secular Bear Market Lite” from the recent peak Dec-2021 (~4,800 for S&P 500) to about 2030. In past Secular Bear Markets the S&P 500 was flat/range-bound for about a decade, but well over a decade (average 24 years) in real (CPI-adjusted) index price terms,” they added.

S&P 500 closed at 4,224 on Friday.

BANGLADESHI TRAIN ACCIDENT: 15 DEAD, 100 INJURED

A train collision between a freight train and a passenger train on Monday (October 23) in the Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj, Bangladesh, has left at least 15 individuals dead and over 100 others severely injured.

The accident transpired when a freight train en route to Chattogram violently collided with the Dhaka-bound Egaro Sindur Express, around 3:30 pm local time, the Bhairab Railway Police Station duty officer, Sirajul Islam, told the media.

"Fifteen bodies have been recovered so far from the wreckage. Death toll could rise," informed Shahjahan Sikder, the media chief of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Walmart and Aldi to lower holiday essential prices.

Starting November 1, you may see cheaper prices for turkey, ham, and all the fixings as you fill your basket at either store. Walmart also plans to offer ready-to-bake Thanksgiving meals at even lower prices than last year, while Aldi has published a long list of price breaks of up to 50 percent on certain brands of gravy mix, cranberries, fried onions, pumpkin pie filling, and more.

EV CAR LUXURY MODELS: HUGE DISCOUNTS ON OFFER

Automakers and car dealers are offering huge discounts on electric vehicles, particularly luxury models.

Hybrid models — with a known and trusted technology that doesn’t require charging stations — are garnering much more interest from consumers, said Pat Ryan, chief executive of the car shopping app company CoPilot. In contrast to EVs, hybrids are selling for more than their sticker prices and are moving quickly off dealer lots, according to data from Edmunds.

In September 2022, the average electric vehicle purchased in the United States, excluding Teslas, went for about $1,500 over sticker price. One year later, the average EV went for about $2,000 under sticker price, according to data from Edmunds. That’s a much bigger change — and a much deeper discount — than for the industry overall. The average new vehicle, overall, sold for only about $900 under its sticker price last month, according to Edmunds.

American semiconductor boom faces roadblock.

According to a July report from the Semiconductor Industry Association, an industry trade group, and Oxford Economics, there will be 85,000 new technical jobs in the industry by 2030. But the report's projections indicate that nearly 80% of those jobs could go unfilled.

“While we are working to improve the situation, including sending experienced technicians from Taiwan to train the local skilled workers for a short period of time, we expect the production schedule of N4 process technology to be pushed out to 2025,” TSMC chairman Mark Liu said on the company's Q2 earnings call.
