Aquatic Ecology - New Special Issue Announcement

This special issue, Microfibre Pollution in Aquatic Ecology, aims to bring together cutting-edge research, critical reviews, and case studies addressing the growing concern of microfibre contamination in aquatic ecosystems. Microfibres, predominantly synthetic fibers released from textiles through washing, industrial processes, and environmental degradation, represent a significant and understudied subset of microplastics. Their pervasive presence in freshwater, marine, and estuarine environments raises urgent ecological, toxicological, and socio-environmental challenges.

The issue will explore the sources, transport pathways, environmental fate, and ecological impacts of microfibres across diverse aquatic habitats. It will also highlight methodological advances in microfibre detection, quantification, and characterization, as well as policy frameworks and mitigation strategies aimed at reducing their release and promoting sustainable solutions.

Join us for the next seminar in our SDG Talks series. We’re excited to welcome Prof. Sergio Rossi, who will be discussing Marine Forests in the Anthropocene.
Marine Animal Forests (MAFs) play a vital role in maintaining marine biodiversity and, crucially, contribute to the global carbon cycle through carbon capture and storage. However, MAFs are in decline due to environmental degradation, making large-scale restoration efforts more urgent than ever. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more.

Prof. Carlos M Duarte - Ocean - The Secret of Planet Earth

The ocean characterises planet Earth and differentiates it from the more than 5000 known planets. It is also the habitat where life emerged as a singularity in the universe. However, we know less about the oceans than we do about some remote planets such as Mars.

This book provides basic facts for understanding the oceans, their properties and their importance to mankind through the ages. The long relationship between the ocean and humanity, which permeates all areas of our culture, is at a crossroads where human activity is profoundly affecting its functioning and the integrity of marine ecosystems. However, the intelligent and rational use of the ocean holds, in large part, the key to providing the resources needed to sustain our quality of life in the future. Unlocking, through scientific research, the secrets that the ocean still holds is an essential challenge for humanity. This book informs the reader about all these aspects of the ocean through a text that combines scientific rigour with personal reflections based on the author's own experiences, dedicated to exploring and learning more about the ocean.
