High in the Colombian Andes, this jewel of a hummingbird flashes its emerald “beard” as it hovers among alpine flowers. Endemic to páramo grasslands, it survives in one of the harshest bird habitats on Earth—thin air, freezing nights, and blazing sun. Once feared extinct, it was rediscovered in 2015, reminding us how resilience and rarity often go hand in hand.
