On April 10, The Barnard Bulletin hosted its 125th anniversary journalism panel and gala. The panel, entitled “Journalism in an Age of Media Mistrust,” featured four journalists: Julianna Goldman (BC ’03), former Bloomberg and CBS White House correspondent; Lisa Lerer (JRN ’04), New York Times National Political Correspondent; Maria Gavrilovic, CBS 60 Minutes Reporter; and Rebecca Deczynski (BC ’16), Senior Editor at Inc. Magazine and former Editor-in-Chief of The Bulletin.

“Without journalism there is no democracy,” Goldman said. “In a time where we feel like our instructions, our society is under siege, the truth, holding leaders accountable, holding institutions accountable, has never been more vital.”

On March 30 at the Diana Event Oval, Barnard hosted “Writing From Home,” the fourth event in its new Curiosity Initiative series.

The event featured Jennifer C. Nash, Jean Fox O’Barr Professor of Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies at Duke University. Nash discussed how contemporary Black feminist writing experiments with voice to foster closeness—with readers, with subjects, and with ideas of home. She reflected on her shift from conventional academic writing to more personal, multivocal forms, sharing excerpts from her forthcoming essay collection, Memory Care (Duke University Press).

The Curiosity Initiative launched this past year and focuses on “how knowledge is shaped across disciplines and experiences.” It is run through the Center for Engaged Pedagogy and the Provost’s Office and brings students and faculty together to think about how “learning, inquiry, and action” connect across academic work and everyday life. In this event specifically, students are invited to think about how their own ideas of home, identity, and lived experience can shape their writing and intellectual work.
