Landfill

Landfill Landfill chronicles and redistributes ephemera generated by socially engaged artworks. Landfill is an online archive, quarterly subscription service, and print journal that studies socially engaged artworks by way of the surplus materials they produce.

Through images and short texts, the Archive turns leftover ephemera into points of entry for past projects. The Quarterly redistributes selected objects, which the Journal contextualizes through essays and interviews. In each of its three parts, Landfill aims to produce an aggregate history as complex as the projects it records.

What We Want Is Free, Second Edition: Critical Exchanges in Recent Art

Just released: the second edition of What We Want Is Free, edited by Ted Purves and Shane Aslan Selzer. Thrilled to have an essay included among so many insightful pieces, and excited to feature projects by Lucas Murgida, Christopher Robbins, Ghana ThinkTank, Michael Parker, Alyse Emdur, the Los Angeles Urban Rangers, Brindalyn Webster, Llano Del Rio Collective, and Paul Ramirez Jonas.

Explores how contemporary artists use gifts, barter, and other forms of nonmonetary exchange as a means and medium of artistic production. This revised edition of What We Want Is Free examines a twenty-year history of artistic productions that both model and occupy the various forms of exchange w...

New today on the Archive: stress balls from MyNerva, Piero Passacantando's nomadic research center devoted to exploring corporate structures. Get yours as part of Issue 4, forthcoming this month.

To cultivate introspection and connection in a space known for engendering anxiety and detachment, MyNerva variously took the form of an office party, corporate retreat, and collaborative brainstorming session.

Whose Terms? New Perspectives on Social Practice

This Saturday: a symposium on the terms of engagement within social practices. Looking forward to hearing from Sally Szwed, Marc Herbst, and others:

The symposium responds to the urgent need to build on the very rich and prolific contemporary discussions about such practices by carefully examining how, to what end, and on whose terms engagement with communities outside of art takes place.

Valuing Labor in the Arts | Art Practical

If you haven't yet checked out the new issue of Art Practical, "Valuing Labor in the Arts," set aside some time. Among the many reasons to read, "On Laboring for Love" features two artists from Landfill's forthcoming issue, Piero Passacantando and Shannon Finnegan: http://bit.ly/1immYJ0

For artists working in the 21st-century economy, a scene in which the very old question of art’s financial contingency arguably has a different kind of urgency and opacity.

Landfill » LFQ 4.1 – Finnegan, 8 Hours of Work

New on the archive today, Shannon Finnegan's 8 Hours of Work.

For eight hours, Shannon Finnegan printed two phrases in ballpoint pen: “I should be working more” and “I should be working less.” The result is a surplus of paperwork and a pointed observation about art and labor.

There are two easels facing each other. I am at one, you at the other. Paint, brushes, canvas and painting uniforms are provided. We have about thirty minutes to make portraits of each other.
