We'll Never Have Paris

We'll Never Have Paris An annual literary memoir zine. Submissions based, advertisement free. Reads like a book, looks like a zine. ABOUT THE ZINE
We’ll Never Have Paris (WNHP) is a journal of nonfiction memoir in zine format.

It started as a biannual in 2007 and became an annual in 2012. WNHP Founding editor Andria Alefhi wanted to see her writing in print, and realized that other emerging writers did too. Collaborating with Jaime Borschuk began in the early issues with cover design, layout work, and story submissions. Asking her to come on board in 2016 to co-edit WNHP 13: West Coast was a natural progression. We publish real stories by diverse writers about *all things never meant to be.*

In that thankful time of year, I'd like to thank the zine community of writers, shop and distro owners and readers. Zines are a vital living artifact that connect us all. I am so grateful that WNHP gets to keep going and that all the zines out there keep plugging away at it too. Keep writing, buying and reading so we can all continue the passion. If you have always wanted to read or write a zine but didn't know how, just do it. I did. There are thousands of options, you will be proud of yourself. Then post it here.

Ah, zinefests. Always a pleasure to meet folks who have read WNHP, want to read more, and are inspired and encouraged to submit a story, joining the ranks of the crossovers from thinking about writing to writing. Just do it. I did in 2007, and we are still here, a little better, a little more well known, but just awkward enough to draw you in. Jaime Borschuk and I are awaiting your submission for WNHP 19: Ever Given until 9/30. Putting the noir in memoir.

We're still accepting submissions to issue #18 for a few more days, deadline is 4/1. Personal stories on the theme of BLUE, 1200 words max. Theme is loose. We care about compelling stories over credentials. If you have an oddball personal essay that doesn't fit anywhere else, we're into that too. We want to hear your POV. https://wellneverhavepariszine.com/submit.html #amwriting #memoir #personalessay #submissions #creativenonfiction

Tonight join 10-11pm EST to hear a live, straight read thru of my literary odyssey "When your mom is first to go". It's not a show or an event and more turning on the camera into my room as I read the zine in keeping with the WNHP "tales from your grandmother's attic" vibe we have been cultivating since 2007. I printed it this summer, knee deep in an America in turmoil when it hardly seemed like the time to bother anyone with this book. This is the story I would like to have told over the years if I'd had the courage. If you do attend you can keep your video off, that is best. It will be a straight-thru read without introduction or socializing. Cover art by Gabriel Liston, layout by Jaime Borschuk.

Readers, writers, fans: Normally you'd be seeing 'last call for submissions' posts. We wanted to let you know that we have received a few submissions but with everything going on, we have been a little in limbo. We are extending the deadline to March 1. WNHP 18, which is the issue for 2021 might be an online only publication just for this year, or, we may be convinced to do a small print run. The theme is 'blue', and all the usual criteria apply: personal essay, nonfiction, 1,200 words or less. If you'd like to read WNHP 18 or submit or just say hi, we'd love to reconnect. Hello America. WNHP is still here. Not much to offer you except zines. Well, mainly just the newest one, WNHP 17, printed the day before the March lockdown. We can offer you that. We're happy to mail you a copy, or you can support your local bookstores or the best zine and small press website, Antiquated Future. Miss you, hope you're well.

PS: Why would you want to read the most current issue of WNHP right now? Well to be honest, there are currently more pressing concerns in America and the world. You might like the reminder that we put a new issue out in March. In fact, I personally biked to the print shop, ubered back to avoid the NYC subway and within the hour took stacks of envelopes to the John St branch the day before lockdowns officially started, with hopes they would make it to bookstores before they all hibernated for the Covid. You might just appreciate the distraction. The issue was preemptively themed 'hindsight'. Oh how I wish we had saved that topic for 2021.

We spaced Independent Bookstore Day this year on Aug 27 with everything going on. With National Book Award nominations out, this is a good time to check in to resources on keeping indie book sellers and authors going. A few links I am exploring are www.indiebound.org and www.publishersweekly.com with indie best seller lists, book buying options, festival updates, and bookstore openings and closures. If you know of any indie bookstores that have either reopened or have closed, we'd love a list on this thread. #bookstoreupdate

To survive the pandemic SF Chinatown has to adapt — again

Melissa Hung, who contributed to the 2019 Food Issue, has recently published an article about San Francisco Chinatown adapting to the pandemic.

The pandemic has brought a shrinking economy and renewed xenophobia to San Francisco's Chinatown. The neighborhood has weathered these problems before, and there's hope it can survive this iteration as well.
