True Story: The KGB Nonfiction Series

True Story: The KGB Nonfiction Series Originally a speakeasy for Ukrainian Socialists who met behind its double-locked doors to hide their political affiliations , the KGB Bar, since its reincarnation in 1993, has become something of a New York literary institution.

Featuring an eclectic mix of well-established writers and up-and-comers—from Joyce Carol Oates and Samuel R. Delaney to graduating mfa candidates—KGB Bar has been named the best literary venue in the city by New York Magazine and the Village Voice, amongst other publications. Having run for just under a decade, the KGB Nonfiction Series—also known as True Story—is the youngest of our wide range of literary events and has been steadily gathering steam with recent appearances by the likes of Francine Prose, Roy Blount Jr., Steve Earle, Binyavanga Wainaina... Our goal is to stretch the bounds of what we call nonfiction, to draw narratives from different media, different realms of art and culture, but most importantly, to provide, every week, a fresh platform for authors to tell it like it is. Schedule for Spring 2015 Feb 10: Men, an ongoing investigation with Laura Kipnis and Kathleen Massara March 10: March Madness: An evening of sports with Mary Pilon, Mina Kimes, and Kate Jenkins. April 14: An evening with very famous cartoonists, readers TBA.

Poetry like this isn’t for everyone—no poetry is—and the lowercase typography and bare emotional content are likely to remind many readers of high-school poetry (their own, perhaps), triggering a squeamish antagonism that distracts from how, tonally, taken as a whole, these poems manage to be assert...

Nine Writers And Publicists Tell All About Readings And Book Tours

well put, Sheila McClear:

Author readings and book tours are not an essential component of the writing or publishing processes, and so these events have long been associated with a kind of miasmic purposelessness. Go to your basic reading and sit in the back row, where if you squint, you will see above the head of almost eve...
