A few highlights from the Spring/Break Art Show (my fave art fair of the year) opening tomorrow thru September 28, 2026.

$42

The theme this year is Hide N Seek. SPRING/BREAK Art Show is an internationally recognized exhibition platform using underused, atypical, and historic New York City and Los Angeles exhibition spaces to activate and challenge the traditional cultural landscape of the art market (usually an empty office building).

This show is interesting because it's curator led, not established galleries, so you get to see actual up-and-coming artists. They are usually in their booths and want to talk about their work with you. It's weirdly immersive, laid back and always fun. It feels like the anti-art fair

I am Tony by Arthur Jafa (Arthur Jafa) is on view at New Museum thru January 3, 2027.

"Over a nearly forty-year career, Jafa has sought to find new visual forms to capture the rhythm and realities of Black life in America. Often placing the nation’s growing awareness of the history of institutional violence directed toward the Black community against the backdrop of the ascension of Black culture, music, and entertainment in American national identity, Jafa’s work turns an unflinching eye toward the past while embodying and mirroring our contemporary obsession with masses of images or ‘content’. I Am Tony, named for the legendary jazz drummer Tony Williams, will chart Jafa’s work from his earliest films to recent video installations, mapping the evolution of his filmic language whose syncopations and textures match the aspirations of Black popular music."

Comfort Zones by Anthea Hamilton is on view at Salon 94 (3 E 89th Street) thru October 24, 2026.

"Born and based in London, with Jamaican and Filipino parentage, she proposes that origin need not determine destination. The places we come from remain with us, carried through forms, habits, materials, and ways of seeing, often without our knowing it. For Hamilton, these geographies need not remain separate or fixed: London is Jamaica is the Philippines is New York...Working across sculpture, installation, image, architecture, fashion, and design, Hamilton has developed a recognizable vocabulary: legs, boots, pumpkins, butterflies, bricks."

Father Country I Do Love You by Taryn Simon is on view at Guggenheim New York thru March 14, 2027.

"Filling the entire rotunda, the presentation brings together never-before-seen photographs, text, videos, and sculptures into a singular interactive installation...The immense project is a labyrinth of stories in which Simon uncovers the ripple effects of her protagonist’s actions and inactions. Through duty, devotion, loss, and happenstance, the federal agent acted as a middleman, witnessing events great and small and collecting evidence for someone else to slot into the bigger picture. Stings and entrapments, traitors and child soldiers, impeachment and Hollywood, mass shootings and poison: everything he touched ricocheted to the outer boundaries of nations and lives he’d never know."

She Said She Said by Arlene Shechet at Pace Gallery (508 W. 25th Street) thru October 4, 2026.

"The monumental sculptures on view extend out of the ethos and power of Girl Group, exhibiting Shechet’s dynamic assembly of forms in which planes of metal are rendered in organic and biomorphic curves across shifting volumes, creating apertures of open space and allowing the touch of their making to shine through. Mark-making and the visible trace of the handmade—the cuts, folds, seams, welds, and joins, all part of the dismantling and revision that makes up her process—are a bridge between Shechet’s metal and clay works."

Taking Up Space by Kandy G Lopez is on view at ACA Galleries est. 1932 (173 Tenth Avenue) thru October 24, 2026.

"Afro-Caribbean American multidisciplinary portrait artist Kandy G Lopez honors the power, dignity, and layered identities of communities historically rendered invisible. Born in New Jersey and raised in South Florida to Dominican parents, Lopez’s practice is shaped by diasporic experience and the negotiation of identity across cultures. Her bold use of color reflects the vibrancy and hybridity of Caribbean and urban American life, while her commitment to portraiture becomes a means of reclaiming visibility for those historically overlooked."

Solid Light, 1973, 2020, 2026 by Anthony McCall (Anthony McCall) is on view at Sean Kelly Gallery (475 Tenth Avenue) thru October 31, 2026.

"Bringing together three significant works spanning over fifty years of the artist’s career, the exhibition traces the remarkable evolution of McCall’s pioneering solid light works, from his groundbreaking Line Describing a Cone, 1973 to Skylight, 2020 and the debut of his newest work Swarm, 2026. The exhibition reveals the sustained rigor with which McCall has redefined the possibilities of sculpture, drawing, cinema, and sound, to create groundbreaking immersive environments."
