Documented: Immigration as it matters to New Yorkers

DocumentedNY is a non-profit news site devoted solely to covering New York City’s immigrants and the policies that affect their lives. Co-founders Max Siegelbaum and Mazin Sidahmed teamed up with Civil to launch this initiative, that went live on June 11, 2018 as the only website to exclusively cover immigrant communities across New York. Our first story broke news on how New York immigrants pay 50 to 650 percent more in bond to get out of immigration detention than native-born New Yorkers pay to get out of jail. Later, we exposed that New York state court officers and clerks were helping ICE agents make arrests, despite the court administration denying it.

Our reporting was referenced on the floor of the New York City Council, by politicians across the state and even in the Canadian Parliament. Documented’s stories got a local court in Westchester to adopt a new policyregarding ICE arrests, led to the divestment of over $1 million in New Jersey taxpayer dollars from private prison companies and spurred national protests in Canada. A member of the Canadian parliament introduced a new bill partially due to the revelations in our story. Our work has been cited by The New York Times, The New Republic, Vox and WNYC, among others, as well as included on college and graduate school syllabi across the City. In April, we were profiled by the local Univision television station.

We are still nonprofit, independent and local news-oriented. This means we need your support to keep offering free content that serves those who need it the most. Consider making a donation here.

One of the biggest accomplishments in our first year was the creation of a Spanish-language WhatsApp newsletter, that aggregates the most important news of the week about immigration policies. Click here to check it out, and please forward it to anyone who may benefit from it. We empower through information, and we try our best to be where immigrant communities are.
