#NYCVIBE - A Retrospective Look Back - Derek Jeter's Annual Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournaments of the Past

This is the time of the year that we would have been talking about the exciting action that would have just taken place in Las Vegas for the Derek Jeter Celebrity Invitational golf tournament to raise funds and awareness for the Turn 2 Foundation.

We are hoping the tournament and gala can take place later this year - as we feel a void in our lives especially supporting important education and social organizations that do important work, we went back into the NYC VIBE vault to keep the spirit alive.

The annual multi-day #golftournament has celebrities and athletes compete head-to-head on the exclusive Shadow Creek golf course with all proceeds going to Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation and its signature programs. The Turn 2 Foundation, founded by Derek Jeter in 1996, aims to help and motivate young people to focus on education, community service and leading a healthy lifestyle.

The Jazz Foundation of America hosts #TheNewGig Live for COVID-19 Emergency Musicians’ Fund #NYCVIBE

May 2020 - The online concert, hosted by Keegan-Michael Key, featured performances by Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Jon Batiste, Robert Cray, Angelique Kidjo and more. The show included appearances from other celebrities including Bruce Willis, Danny Glover, Rosie Perez, and Jeffrey Wright.

Additionally, the program featured archival footage of performances by Patti Smith, Herbie Hancock, Brittany Howard, and others performing at JFA’s “A Great Night in Harlem” annual fundraiser events over the past ears.

NYC VIBE was at the famed Apollo Theater last year for a great night honoring the legendary Tony Bennett.

All proceeds from the show go to JFA’s Covid-19 Emergency Musicians’ Fund, which was founded to support musicians who have been put out of work due to the pandemic.

NYC VIBE goes into our priceless vault to summarize the great work the organization is doing and look back at this week and last year!

“Support for #TheNewGig and the COVID-19 Musicians’ Emergency Fund offers them direct assistance and creates a sense of solidarity and hope in a time of despair and uncertainty.”

Virtual Telethon Hosted by Tina Fey Unites Star-studded Group of New York's Biggest Actors, Athletes, Musicians, Politicians, Chefs and More:

Robin Hood, New York's largest poverty-fighting organization, aired a citywide "virtual telethon" to raise awareness and funds to help New Yorkers whose lives have been dramatically impacted by COVID-19.

Hosted by Tina Fey, "Rise Up New York!" brought together bighearted New Yorkers with one common goal: to raise funds for Robin Hood's relief and recovery efforts to help fellow New Yorkers rebuild their lives as the city moves towards recovery and beyond. One hundred percent of donations raised are deployed directly to the organizations on the frontlines who are providing support for food, shelter, cash assistance, health and mental health, legal services, education and more.

NYC VIBE has covered the Robin Hood fundraising galas in the past and is pleased to see more than $115 million has been raised toward relief and recovery efforts since the onset of the pandemic in New York City. In addition to the telethon, over $44 million of the funds were already raised through the Robin Hood Relief Fund and over $1.5 million has been taken in through Robin Hood's "Relief Corps,".

Lin-Manuel Miranda kicked off a rendition of "New York, New York" with at-home Broadway stars Andrew Rannells, Ben Platt, Chris Jackson, Cynthia Erivo, Idina Menzel and Karen Olivo.

The benefit closed with NY Governor Andrew Cuomo by introducing a special performance of "Miami 2017" by his friend Billy Joel, which took over 13 of Times Square's digital billboards.

At the same time, the Empire State Building debuted a choreographed lighting spectacle that will repeat every night throughout this week.

#NYCVIBE appreciates when the work is good, special, and different. When a New York Fashion Week runway show is so much more, it creates a long lasting impression. That is exactly what Taiwanese-born fashion designer Malan Breton accomplished back in February 2017 at Madison Square Garden.

NYC VIBE first met Malan the September before and came away deeply impressed, vowing to cover his very next show in order to learn more, which we did.

Granted special access backstage to see firsthand how Malan operates, we were amazed by the time and care that Malan took in explaining the individual roles he had in mind for each model. It was not just a catwalk showing off clothes- it was an immersive narrative about female empowerment, showcasing the lives and looks of women in 1940’s America to that of the modern American woman of 2017.

Malan pulled out all the stops- magnificent well-thought-out designs, a well-executed stage show, mesmerizing music all tied together with many underlying themes.

Models took to the expansive stage as black-and-white images were projected on a large screen and music of the era resonated throughout The Theatre at Madison Square Garden.

Backstage, Malan became emotional while describing the collection, explaining “This collection is about hope. I would hope it would give everyone a sense of who they are. And a sense of possibility.”

Celebrity models in Breton’s show included Frankie Grande, Angel Pai, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, Kiera Chaplin, Dylan Grieco, and Janine Tugonon, among others.

#NYCVIBE is checking on Olympic athletes who have changed their training routines to now focus on Tokyo 2021 instead. Last September, Laurie Hernandez invited NYC VIBE out to watch her training session in Costa Mesa, CA where afterwards we sat down and talked about her goals, ambitions, injuries, focus and being a children’s book author.

The 19 year-old New Jersey native captured the hearts of audiences across the globe during the 2016 Summer Olympics competing as a member of the U.S. Women’s gymnastics team that became known as the “Final Five.” Laurie took home a Gold medal and a Silver medal, thrusting her into the international spotlight as an Olympic champion.

Hernandez set off a social media craze when she was captured telling herself “I Got This,” moments before stepping out to compete. The clip instantly went viral on the internet, effectively immortalizing the moment forever in the form of a meme. This moment ultimately inspired Laurie’s approach to her newfound platform as a role model - motivating her to write a memoir called I Got This: To Gold and Beyond and a children’s book called She Got This. Hernandez wanted to inspire and encourage others by sharing her stories of overcoming struggle and imparting her life mantra - “Never Give Up.”

NYC VIBE first caught up with Laure when she received the coveted Jefferson Awards in Midtown Manhattan and a celebrity awards gala.

Demand for Plant Based Meat Skyrockets as More People Pivot to a Healthier Lifestyle. #NYCVIBE

The coronavirus-caused meat shortage and a growing awareness of our problematic animal agriculture system has meatless meat sales skyrocketing. According to a recent Nielsen report, demand for these products has increased 278% since last year. Meatless meat brands like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat are launching initiatives to increase widespread availability of their products and to encourage and educate people on the advantages of transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle.

NYC VIBE revisits recent conversations with plant-based diet advocates Dr. Oz, Adrian Grenier, Serena Williams, Jon Stewart, Edie Falco and many others who endorse the health benefits of removing meat and animal products from your diet.

#NYCVIBE #JimmyHeath #JazzMaster #JazzMusician #JazzLegend

#NYCVIBE takes a look back at footage of the late Jimmy Heath performing at the 2017 @JazzmobileNY Summerfest Concert in Central Park.

Jimmy was a celebrated saxophonist, composer, arranger and big band leader whose prolific career spanned over seven decades of jazz history. Heath played alongside some of the biggest names in Jazz, including Miles Davis, John Coltrane and countless others. He was a smaller man - 5’3’’, but generated a big sound as a tenor saxophonist. He earned the nickname “Little Bird,” because of the influence of Charlie Parker, whose nickname was “Bird.” Heath is often credited with bringing the bebop revolution of the 1940’s to the music of succeeding generations.

We’re reminded of happier times as we revisit Heath’s electric performance at the 2017 Summerfest concert in Central Park. Heath joined rising stars @mattwhitaker (Matt Whitaker) and @AllanHarrisMusic (Allan Harris) on stage in a performance that celebrated Jazz and its continued influence in the modern music landscape.

A loss of a legend in the jazz world!

#NYCVIBE #LangLangFoundation #Pianist

NYC VIBE shares the concerns of the classical great pianist, Lang Lang, that when this ends, if it ever does, that cities will be so in the red that funding for school programs for the arts and music could be eliminated or severely reduced.

That’s why we dug back into our video archives - November of 2018 when NYC VIBE was on hand at the Lang Lang Foundation fundraising gala in lower Manhattan.

See for yourself the results of the incredible work the foundations does in NYC schools and throughout the nation.

We are hoping that Lang Lang is able to host the 2020 gala later this year which we will all get behind and support.

Lang Lang is a pianist, educator, and philanthropist, equally happy playing for billions of viewers at the 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremony in Beijing and for just a few hundred children in the public schools. He performs sold-out concerts all over the world.

In 2013 the Secretary General of the United Nations designated Lang Lang as a Messenger of Peace focusing on global education. He was presented with the 2010 Crystal Award in Davos and named one of the 250 Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum. He has received honorary doctorates from the Royal College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and New York University. In December 2011 Lang Lang was honored with the highest prize awarded by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. He received the Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and was named a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. In 2016 he was invited to the Vatican to perform for Pope Francis.

The 37-year-old pianist, who typically plays sold-out shows to thousands, says he's taking his recent solitary time to learn new repertoire at home in Shanghai, China. And home is where he thinks we should all be. "It's very important that you have to stay at home please," he says from the piano, where he opens with Chopin's calming Nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor.

Lang Lang's latest passion is Bach – specifically the Goldberg Variations, a 75-minute-long cycle of immense complexity grounded in the composer's durable beauty. Lang Lang offers the 18th and 19th variations, pieces that in turn represent the strength of logic and the joy of the dance. It's music, Lang Lang says, that "always brings me to play in another level of artistic thinking."

The Legends of Broadway Gather Online to Celebrate Stephen Sondheim’s 90th Birthday

The legendary show business composer Stephen Sondheim celebrated his 90th birthday back on March 22 - but because of the virus outbreak and Broadway being forced to shut down, nobody could figure out how to celebrate this milestone.

Until last night.

NYC VIBE joined the online tribute produced by which brought together the greats of the theater, screen and stage to reminisce, laugh, reflect and of course, sing Stephen Sondheim’s songs.

The spirited and lively show benefited the nonprofit ASTEP, Artists Striving to End Poverty, which was fitting for such a legend.

The musical get together featured appearances and performances from celebrities like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Josh Groban, Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, Brian Stokes Mitchell (who is recovering from the virus), Jake Gyllenhaal, Beanie Feldstein, Ben Platt, Sutton Foster, Bernadette Peters, Audra McDonald and many more.

The two and half hour concert closed with various Broadway stars singing "I'm Still Here,” which served as a touching salute to Sondheim as well as the Broadway community amid the current shutdown.

NYC VIBE caught up with the cast of the new West Side Story recently to talk about what it meant to perform in a play that Stephen Sondheim created the foundation for.
