The Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) was established in 1971 by a passionate group of families driven to find treatments and cures for inherited retinal diseases that were affecting their loved ones. At that time, little was known about these blinding retinal degenerative diseases. Very little research was being done, and there were no clinical trials for potential treatments.
The Foundation’s goal was clear and focused: To drive the research that would lead to preventions, treatments, and vision restoration for the spectrum of degenerative retinal diseases, specifically macular degeneration – including age related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, Usher syndrome, Stargardt disease and Leber congenital amurosis (LCA). Together these conditions affect more than 10 million Americans and millions more throughout the world.
Today, the Foundation Fighting Blindness is the world’s leading private funder of retinal disease research. That funding has been a driving force behind the progress toward cures, including the identification of more than 250 genes linked to retinal disease, and the launch of 20 clinical trials for potential treatments.
On an annual basis, the Foundation Fighting Blindness and the Foundation’s Clinical Research Institute fund more than 100 research grants. Ms. Perry, who proclaimed her love for New York City from a cherry pie van as her new song blared from a thundering sound-system situated on the northern triangle of Times Square known as Duffy Square, was almost unrecognizable to longtime fans with her new close-cropped pixie blonde hairstyle.

Italian opera star Andrea Bocelli was serenaded by Franciscan Monks on the occasion of his 54th birthday this past week during the historic "Global Gathering" conference in Assisi, Italy.
Bocelli, along with American soul songstress Dionne Warwick and other notable musical artists, were in the birthplace of St. Francis to perform a benefit concert at the "Global Gathering" - a historic series of conferences organized by the Fetzer Institute to promote love, forgiveness, and peace among peoples of the world.
Monks Render Two Versions of "Happy Birthday" at Convent of St. Francis: When the Franciscan Monks discovered that the concert date coincided with the day of Bocelli's birth, they invited the world renown singer to join them in a simple dinner in the refectory of their basilica complex - a Franciscan tradition of hospitality.
Father Giuseppe Piemontese, the custodian of the Sacred Convent of St Francis, praised Bocelli in a ceremonial toast in which he intoned " we...praise the Lord for the gift of Andrea, and the gift of his life."

July 2012 New York: Track and field icon Marla Runyan, the first legally blind athlete to compete in the Olympics, is working with Camp Abilities to give hope, education and empowerment to visually impaired youth.
Children with visual impairments (VI) face many obstacles in their physical development, due to both societal perceptions of their capacities and the limitations of the disability itself.
The result is that children with VI have low levels of physical activity and high rates of health problems that result from lack of physical fitness. In response to these challenges, Camp Abilities provides a one-week, developmental sports camp for children who are visually impaired, blind or deafblind.
About Camp Abilities: Camp Abilities was founded in 1996 by Dr. Lauren Lieberman in Brockport, N.Y. Camps have since been established in 10 other U.S. states and also in Ireland, Puerto Rico and Guatemala.
The mission of Camp Abilities is four-fold.

October 2012 New York, New York: Ho, ho, ho! Celebrity mom Alison Sweeney and the Jolly Green Giant are working together to get kids to eat their vegetables!
