SOUTH MEDIA TRENDS-TV EDITORIAL: LET PEACE CONTINUE TO DEFINE CAMPAIGNS IN CHOMA AND SOUTHERN PROVINCE

As Zambia continues with the 2026 election campaign period, South Media Trends-TV calls on all political parties, candidates, supporters and citizens in Choma District and the wider Southern Province to continue embracing peace, tolerance and respect throughout the remaining campaign period.

Campaigns are an important part of democracy, giving citizens an opportunity to listen to different ideas, assess leadership qualities and make informed decisions. However, political competition should never divide communities, damage relationships or create unnecessary tension among citizens.

Choma District has continued to witness political activities where different players engage with communities to share their messages and programmes. As these activities continue, it is important that all stakeholders remember that after elections, people will remain neighbours, friends, colleagues and family members.

South Media Trends-TV believes that the strength of democracy is not measured by how aggressively people oppose each other, but by how respectfully different opinions can coexist. Supporters should allow citizens the freedom to choose leaders of their preference without intimidation, insults or violence.

Political leaders and campaign teams have a responsibility to guide their supporters by promoting issue-based campaigns that focus on development, service delivery and solutions to challenges affecting communities.

We further encourage young people, who form a significant part of the electorate, to use social media responsibly by sharing information that promotes unity rather than content that spreads hatred, misinformation or division.

The Copper Queens may have filled the goal basket more generously than their rivals, but when CAF reached for the calculator instead of the goal difference column, Zambia's journey at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations came to a painful end.

Many football fans were left scratching their heads after Zambia bowed out of the tournament despite finishing with the best overall goal difference in Group C and level on six points with Malawi and Nigeria.

However, the answer was hidden not in the total goals scored throughout the group stage, but inside CAF's rulebook.

According to the competition regulations, when three or more teams finish on the same number of points, the first referee is not goal difference but the head-to-head mini-table, where only matches involving the tied teams are taken into account.

In Group C, Zambia, Malawi and Nigeria each defeated one another, creating a three-way knot that could not be untied by points alone.

CAF therefore opened the mini-table and counted only the goals scored among the three tied nations.

When the arithmetic whistle finally blew, Malawi had found the net four times, Nigeria three, while Zambia managed only two goals, both coming in their victory over Malawi.

Although the Copper Queens walked away with the best overall goal difference of +6, that impressive statistic remained locked outside the door because the tournament rules required the head-to-head mini-table to decide the final standings first.

The outcome meant Malawi and Nigeria marched into the quarter-finals, while Zambia's campaign ended, leaving many supporters disappointed that a team with the strongest overall goal difference could still miss out on qualification.

MWEETWA URGES CHOMA VOTERS TO REJECT INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES

UPND Choma Central Constituency parliamentary candidate Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa has urged voters in Simacheche Ward to reject independent candidates and instead support the UPND team in the August 13 General Elections.

Mweetwa made the remarks during a community engagement meeting held at Kabanana and Choma Primary School grounds in Simacheche Ward, where he continued his campaign ahead of the elections.
He urged residents to vote for President Hakainde Hichilema, himself as Choma Central Member of Parliament, UPND Choma mayoral candidate Honest Mweemba, and Simacheche Ward councillor candidate Simaato.

Mweetwa told residents that voting for the UPND team would help ensure continued development and effective coordination between the central government, Parliament, the council and the ward.

He further encouraged voters to remain united and focused as they prepare to exercise their democratic right on August 13.
