Amy King and her boyfriend, Michael Tarrou, loved the skies. Both were United Airlines flight attendants, and they always tried to arrange their schedules so they could fly together — to share the long layovers, the sunrise views above the clouds, and the small moments in between.
On September 11th, 2001, they did just that.Together, they boarded United Flight 175, bound for Los Angeles.Neither could have known that their flight would become part of history — when it was hijacked and struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
They lived their last moments side by side — as they had chosen to live their lives: together, serving others, in the sky they loved.
Twenty-four years later, their story still reminds us that behind every headline are hearts that beat, hands that held, and love that endures beyond tragedy.

Jennifer Gore Lewis, aged 37, was a passenger on Flight 77.

Born on October 16, 1963, to Britt and Harold Gore, Jennifer had three brothers: Barry, Geoff, and Chris. She resided in Culpeper, Virginia. In 1991, at an American Airlines Christmas party, she met her beloved Kenneth Lewis. Both were flight attendants for the airline and tied the knot in 1993. Their relationship was often described as a 'match made in heaven,' and they were known for their inseparable bond. Friends affectionately nicknamed them 'Kennifer' and 'Barbie and Ken.' They shared a passion for travel, with Los Angeles being their favorite destination. Due to their seniority at the airline, they could coordinate joint assignments to travel together. Jennifer also enjoyed horseback riding and playing practical jokes. On September 10th, she and Kenneth were excitedly preparing for another trip to Los Angeles. The following morning, they boarded Flight 77.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Jennifer and her husband Kenneth boarded American Airlines Flight 77, heading to Los Angeles. Both were working as flight attendants on this flight and had planned a vacation together upon arrival. Tragically, they never reached their destination, as Flight 77 was the third aircraft hijacked on September 11th, crashing into the Pentagon and resulting in the loss of all lives on board, including those of Jennifer and Kenneth. Although their lives were tragically cut short on that day, the memories of Jennifer and Kenneth remain alive. Their love, life, and legacy will always be honored and remembered.

Happy heavenly birthday, WE WILL NEVER FORGET. ❤️🕊

On the morning of September 11, 2001, 33-year-old CeeCee Lyles, like many others across the nation, made a phone call to a loved one shortly after three hijacked planes were intentionally crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Unable to connect with her husband, Lorne, she left a message on his answering machine: "You must listen to me carefully. I am on a plane that has been hijacked."

Lyles was one of seven flight crew members on board United Airlines Flight 93, the fourth and final plane to be hijacked that morning. The flight had departed from Newark International Airport, destined for San Francisco. At the time she made the call, the aircraft was en route to Washington, D.C. instead.

That January, Lyles achieved a lifelong aspiration by completing her training as a flight attendant with United Airlines.

"She always dreamed of being a flight attendant so she could travel," her husband shared with the Post-Gazette. Before her career as a flight attendant, she served as a police officer in her hometown of Fort Pierce, FL, beginning as a patrol officer and eventually advancing to detective. Highly regarded by her fellow officers for her readiness to face any challenge, she drew upon that resolve on 9/11 during the critical moments following the hijacking of her plane.

In her message to Lorne at 9:47 a.m., Lyles expressed her love for her children and stated, "They’ve hijacked the plane, I’m trying to remain calm. We’ve turned around, and I’ve heard that planes have been flown into the World Trade Center. I hope to see your face again, baby. I love you."” RIP CeeCee ❤️🕊️
MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE 🕊️

On September 11, 2001, a single photograph captured the world’s attention: Marcy Borders, a 28-year-old bank employee, covered head to toe in thick gray dust as she fled the collapsing World Trade Center. The haunting image immortalized her as “The Dust Lady,” symbolizing the human cost and chaos of that tragic day.

Although Marcy survived the attacks, the trauma lingered. She struggled with depression and anxiety in the years that followed, and later developed cancer, which she believed was linked to the toxic dust she had inhaled during the disaster. The physical and emotional scars of that day shaped the rest of her life.

Marcy Borders passed away on August 24, 2015, at just 42 years old. Yet her story endures as a testament to resilience and courage. Beyond the iconic image, she represents the personal struggles, strength, and sorrow carried by countless 9/11 survivors, reminding the world that every tragic photograph reflects a real life touched by tragedy.

The Unforgettable Bravery of Rick Rescorla — A Man Who Sacrificed Everything on 9/11.

Rick Rescorla: The Hero Who Saved 2,700 Lives on 9/11

Rick Rescorla spent a lifetime serving others — first as a soldier, then as a protector. He fought for the British military for six years and later earned a Purple Heart for his bravery with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Yet, the most courageous act of his life came decades later, inside the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

As smoke and panic consumed the building, thousands of people crowded into stairwells, desperate to escape. In the middle of the chaos, a calm, commanding voice rose above the fear. Holding a bullhorn, Rick Rescorla — Vice President of Security at Morgan Stanley — sang “God Bless America,” urging people to keep moving.

Rick wasn’t just reacting in the moment — he had prepared for this day. For years, he insisted on running evacuation drills, despite complaints that they were disruptive. On 9/11, those drills saved lives. While official instructions told people to stay put, Rick refused to listen. He began evacuating nearly every Morgan Stanley employee, guiding 2,700 people to safety.

When others told him to leave because his mission was complete, Rick refused. “You hear those screams?” he said, pointing upward. “There’s more people up there. I have to help get them out.”

Rick kept climbing. He encouraged people with songs — even a Welsh battle hymn he had once sung to his soldiers in Vietnam. Between evacuations, he called his wife, Susan. His last words to her were filled with love:
“Stop crying. I have to get these people out safely. If something should happen to me, I want you to know I’ve never been happier. You made my life.”

Moments later, the South Tower collapsed. Rick Rescorla was last seen on the 10th floor, still helping others. His body was never recovered.

Rick could have walked out. He chose to stay. That decision cost him his life — but saved thousands.

Today, Rick Rescorla is remembered as one of the greatest heroes of 9/11. His foresight, leadership, and selfless courage turned a day of unimaginable tragedy into a story of hope and humanity...

There was a time when you could see the core structure of the twin towers

In the early 1970s, New Yorkers witnessed a surreal sight: the skeletal cores of the World Trade Center towers piercing the skyline before their outer walls were completed. The image shows the “core structure” — the massive steel spine that housed elevators, stairwells, and utilities — bathed in the glow of a setting sun.

Each tower’s core was a fortress of 47 steel columns, built to bear much of the building’s vertical load. Around it, a perimeter of 59 steel columns on each face created the towers’ distinctive facade. For a brief window during construction, the cores rose high above the city, exposed like the ribs of a colossal machine.

Within just a few months, those skeletal frames would vanish behind aluminum cladding and glass, transforming into the iconic Twin Towers. But for those who saw them in this unfinished state, it was a rare glimpse of the engineering heart of what would become two of the most recognizable buildings in the world.

Mike Kehoe served as an FDNY firefighter with Ladder Company 6 on September 11, 2001. He gained significant recognition due to a famous photograph depicting him ascending the stairwell of the North Tower while civilians were evacuating downwards following the impact of the first plane.

Key Facts about Mike Kehoe on 9/11:

He was among the initial firefighters to enter the North Tower after Flight 11 struck.

Kehoe and his team ascended towards the impact zone to assist trapped civilians.

The image of him fully equipped on the stairs became a symbol of bravery and sacrifice.

Ladder 6 was one of the units that endured the North Tower's collapse, as they were located near the 4th floor with injured civilian Josephine Harris.

Despite the collapse, Kehoe and his crew survived and subsequently aided in the evacuation.
