A Tribute to Garth E. Feeney, who passed away on September 11, 2001.

An Engineer's Shortcut
Earning an engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania typically necessitates a five-year commitment. However, it is noteworthy that Garth E. Feeney achieved this feat in merely four years while also majoring in business. The extensive range of activities he undertook concurrently left his family astonished.
Mr. Feeney, who was 28 years old, attended a conference at Windows on the World on September 11. He provided tutoring to an adult who struggled with reading, launched a program for underprivileged children, participated in campus security, served as a dorm counselor, represented the university on its board of trustees, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. "He was one of those individuals who did everything and anything," his mother, Judy Feeney, remarked.
Even after moving to New York, where he worked as the director of corporate development for Data Synapse in Manhattan, he continued to lead an active lifestyle. He was an avid rock climber, scuba diver, kayaker, and inline skater, taking every opportunity to glide through Central Park.
One aspect of his life that his parents were unaware of until they heard anecdotes from friends at his memorial service was Mr. Feeney's extraordinary frugality. Despite earning a commendable salary, he refrained from using taxis, even for trips to the airport, and was fond of utilizing coupons, including those from the fast-food chain Subway, where he would buy one sandwich for lunch and receive another for free for dinner. "We were not aware that he was quite that economical," his mother commented.

(CNN) -- Greer Epstein was recognized for her unwavering dedication to work, rarely taking breaks.
An executive director at Morgan Stanley, she infrequently left her office situated on the 67th floor due to her demanding schedule.
However, 20 minutes prior to 9 a.m., a friend reached out to her. "Would you like to step outside for a cigarette?" He aimed to talk about an upcoming work meeting. The day was tranquil with clear blue skies -- the most breathtaking view she had ever witnessed from the World Trade Center. Epstein considered, why not?
As she descended in the elevator, she experienced a sudden jolt but brushed it off, as the elevators had always exhibited peculiar behavior.
Upon stepping outside to ignite her Benson & Hedges, she observed individuals standing motionless, their eyes fixed on the sky. Papers floated down like erratic confetti. As she watched the flames and smoke billowing from a gash in the North Tower, she contemplated: "How can they fix something like that?"
At that instant, a plane collided with her office in the South Tower.
A cigarette break ultimately preserved her life.

Wishing a joyful heavenly birthday to FDNY firefighter Michael Lyons. Born on June 20, 1969, he would have been celebrating his 56th birthday today. We will forever honor the ultimate sacrifice he made on September 11, 2001.

Michael J. Lyons, hailing from Hawthorne, New York, never had the chance to meet his second daughter, Mary Michael, who was named in his memory. She arrived on November 2. Lyons dedicated seven years of service to the New York Fire Department, specifically with Squad 41 in Harlem.

His mother-in-law, Norma Cody, noted that Lyons was a devoted worker who also volunteered with the Hawthorne Fire Company No. 1. She recounted that he lost his life while trying to save victims from the south tower. "He was always busy, involved in one activity or another," she reminisced. Cody conveyed that she would miss many facets of him, but his absence would be the most profound loss. "He had a playful spirit, always joking around," Cody remarked. "He was a cheerful person with an extraordinary personality."

She shared that he loved to spend his free time playing golf, darts, or fishing. "He was truly a compassionate individual," she added. "He would come in and give you a hug. He has been like family for such a long time." Lyons first encountered his wife, Elaine Cody Lyons, when he was about 15 years old. They worked together in a deli, where he was behind the counter and she was a waitress, as per Cody's account.

Lyons was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Taggart Lyons of Yonkers, N.Y., where he completed his elementary education. He graduated from Manhattan College in the Bronx with a degree in mechanical engineering. He is survived by his wife, Elaine, his one-year-old daughter, Caitlyn, and his newborn daughter, Mary Michael. (Hartford Courant)

Today we pay tribute to YVETTE ANDERSON, who departed this life on September 11, 2001.

MASTER OF THE FEAST
Below are some dishes that Yvette Anderson might have offered in her dream restaurant: corn pudding, barbecued chicken, fried chicken, turkey wings, collard greens mixed with kale and turnip greens, banana pudding, lemon meringue pie, and peach cobbler. Furthermore, her daughter Rasha McMillon's preferred dish was yellow and green squash sautéed with onions.
For many years, the congregation of White Rock Baptist Church in Harlem, where Mrs. Anderson participated in prayer, praise dancing, and caring for the elderly, enjoyed her culinary delights. At the age of 53, Mrs. Anderson aimed to share her cooking with the public shortly after she earned her bachelor's degree in hotel and restaurant management the following May. In the meantime, she was diligently saving her income from two jobs: serving as a waitress at a soul food restaurant on weekends and working as a keyboard specialist at the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance during the weekdays, situated in the World Trade Center.
Having lost her parents at the age of 15, Mrs. Anderson taught her children the principles of self-sufficiency and diligence. Nevertheless, she was also a cheerful and generous person, motivated by her faith. On the evening of September 10, she styled her daughter's hair and remarked, "I don't know why, but I have a nervous feeling." Later, Ms. McMillon recalled that her mother reached out to a church friend to share her love for God.

🔥 A Moment Etched in History — The Collapse Unleashed
This haunting aerial photograph captures the precise moment when one of the Twin Towers succumbed—a violent cascade of steel, concrete, and shattered glass erupting into the sky, engulfing Lower Manhattan within seconds.

A massive plume of dust surged outward like a tidal wave, consuming streets, erasing landmarks, and transforming broad daylight into darkness. The familiar skyline vanished. The city held its breath.

It was not merely the collapse of a building—it represented the collapse of time itself. For that one unbearable instant, the world stood still in shock, grief, and disbelief.

This image remains one of the most vivid, devastating reminders of the tragedy that transpired on September 11, 2001.

Operating from East 29th Street in Manhattan, Ladder Company 7 played a crucial role in the FDNY’s emergency response efforts in lower Manhattan, particularly at the World Trade Center complex. On the morning of September 11, 2001, they collaborated with Ladder 118 to address the developing crisis at the South Tower.

One of the most poignant images from that day shows six members of Ladder 7—together with firefighters from Ladder 118—captured in a final photograph as they approached the burning South Tower. Merely ten minutes later, the tower fell, claiming the lives of all 13 men depicted in the image. In that moment of unimaginable grief, Ladder 7 lost six of its own.

The six fallen heroes of Ladder 7 included:

Captain Vernon Allan Richard, 53

Firefighter George Cain, 35

Firefighter Robert Joseph Foti, 42

Firefighter Charles Mendez, 38

Firefighter Richard Muldowney Jr., 40

Firefighter Vincent Princiotta, 39

While Ladder 7’s losses were not the most significant among FDNY companies that day, the bravery, selflessness, and dedication of these individuals profoundly impact the department’s legacy. Their names are inscribed in the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, serving as a lasting tribute to their sacrifice and the lives they endeavored to save.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorists seized control of four commercial airplanes in a synchronized assault on the United States. Two of these aircraft—American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175—were intentionally crashed into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center located in New York City.

The collisions and subsequent fires led to the collapse of both 110-story towers within a few hours, resulting in the deaths of thousands. In total, 2,977 individuals lost their lives that day, including 343 firefighters from the FDNY, 23 officers from the NYPD, and 37 officers from the Port Authority police, marking it as the most lethal terrorist attack in the history of the world.

The assaults also resulted in the fall of World Trade Center 7 and inflicted significant damage on nearby structures. First responders, civilians, and recovery personnel encountered unimaginable circumstances in the days and months that ensued.

In the years that followed, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum was established at Ground Zero to pay tribute to the victims and heroes. The attacks transformed global politics, national security, and the lives of millions permanently.

David Shelby Berry was born on May 31, 1958, to Nancy and Charles Berry in Oklahoma City, OK. He was the youngest of four sons, having two older brothers, Michaels and C. Nelson, along with a third brother, Chris, who tragically succumbed to cancer at the age of 9. He resided in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY. David attended and graduated from Casady School in Oklahoma City, Yale University in 1980, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Physics, and the London School of Economics in 1984, obtaining a Master’s degree and a Diploma of Distinction. He married his beloved, Paula Grant Berry, and together they had three sons: Nile, age 9, Reed, age 7, and Alex, age 5 at the time of David’s passing. David was a deeply devoted father, always giving his children his undivided attention during their time together. One of the children’s cherished memories of their father occurred on a particularly rainy day when rain cascaded through the gutters, and the children joyfully dashed through the family’s summer house. David joined them, leaned into the gutter, and crafted small boats to navigate along the rain’s river-like flow. His wife, Paula, reminisced about the moment, stating, “In playing with the children, there was no distraction. He was nowhere but right there in the moment, right there.” David was profoundly committed to his family, keeping pictures of them displayed throughout his office. Despite being an expert in his field and holding a prestigious role, he was always approachable and welcoming to everyone at the office, readily offering advice, knowledge, and engaging in friendly debates with anyone who sought his input. David cultivated numerous friendships throughout his life and was characterized by his friends and family as kind, humorous, supportive, and warm. David served as the director of research at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, located on the 89th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. He had been with the company since 1986 and was a member of their Board of Directors and operating committee. He achieved significant success, often appearing on financial news programs and being quoted in financial publications.

Jill Marie Maurer-Campbell was 31 years old on the morning of September 11, 2001. She was working on the 78th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center—caught in the very zone where United Airlines Flight 175 struck the building.

Originally from New Jersey, Jill was a loving daughter, sister, wife, and friend. She had recently married and was full of joy and plans for the future. Colleagues remember her as warm-hearted and intelligent, with a strong work ethic and a contagious smile that lit up the room.

Jill was on a conference call with coworkers when the tower was hit. She was seen trying to help others escape in the chaos. Like so many, she was taken far too soon—her life cut short in the middle of an ordinary workday that turned into one of the darkest moments in history.

Though she is no longer with us, her spirit continues to live on through the love she gave and the lives she touched.

We honor and remember Jill Marie Maurer-Campbell—
A bright light extinguished too early,
A hero in her final moments,
Forever missed, forever remembered.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, FDNY Battalion Chief Joseph Pfeifer was engaged in a routine investigation of a gas leak in lower Manhattan. Shortly thereafter, he looked up to see Flight 11 collide with the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Chief Pfeifer was the first chief to arrive on the scene, and within moments, he entered the North Tower lobby to establish the initial command post.

With composed leadership, he initiated the organization of rescue operations, directing incoming fire units and dispatching firefighters up the stairwells to assist trapped civilians. Among those civilians was his younger brother, Lieutenant Kevin Pfeifer, who was with Engine 33. Tragically, Kevin did not survive.

As the South Tower fell at 9:59 a.m., Chief Pfeifer promptly ordered an evacuation. Moments later, he narrowly escaped the collapse of the North Tower, using his own body to shield filmmaker Jules Naudet—who had been documenting the events—as debris cascaded around them. Amidst the turmoil, Chief Pfeifer remained at Ground Zero, continuing rescue operations and overseeing one of the most catastrophic disasters in American history.

In the subsequent years, Chief Pfeifer emerged as a prominent advocate for the transformation of the FDNY. He established the Center for Terrorism and Disaster Preparedness, shaping the department's response strategies for future emergencies. Over a distinguished 37-year career, he advanced to the position of Assistant Chief and became the FDNY’s inaugural Chief of Counterterrorism and Emergency Preparedness.

He retired in 2018 but made a return in 2023 to take on the role of First Deputy Fire Commissioner, briefly serving as Acting Fire Commissioner in 2024. Chief Pfeifer has also contributed to academia by teaching at Columbia University, where he has played a role in training the next generation of leaders in crisis management and public safety.
