Kris Marshall left Death in Paradise primarily for family reasons. When he was offered the role, he and his wife decided he would do the show for a few years until it became "impractical" for their young children. Marshall's son was an infant at the time, and the family would accompany him to Guadeloupe for filming. As his son got older and needed to start school, the six-month-long filming schedule in the Caribbean became a major challenge. In a lighthearted comment that later drew some criticism, Marshall joked to a morning show host that his son was becoming "too Caribbean" and needed to return to the UK for a proper education.
The actor later reprised his role as DI Humphrey Goodman in the spin-off series, Beyond Paradise, which is set in the UK, a location that allows him to be closer to his family. His departure from the original series was planned and amicable, mirroring his character's exit, which saw Humphrey leave the island to be with his love interest, Martha, in London.
