Gentry Coats' fatal overdose stuns a small community in North Carolina, launching events that undermine the traditional values to which they cling. The loss triggers a darkness in his best friend, a police officer whose wife is then forced to grapple with the burden of her vows in the face of his disturbing behavior. Gentry’s mother struggles with rage and loneliness, and his brother retreats into a devastating kind of isolation until he is all but forgotten. In a trailer on the outskirts of town, an eight-year-old girl and her older sister cope with a horrific secret that comes to light in the worst possible way, all while the old patriarchs of the town sit at the local diner, quite certain that the Lord will heal it all.

A novel in stories, Lord the One You Love is Sick is a gorgeously written and heartrending work of fiction from an important new voice in the literature of the American South.

Kasey Thornton attended both the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and North Carolina State University for her MFA in Fiction. Her creative work has been featured in the Masters Review, TJ Eckleberg Review, tinyjournal, Colonnades Literary & Art Journal, and Apeiron Review. She lives with fellow author Kevin Kauffmann in Durham, North Carolina, where her family has resided for over two-hundred years.

So happy for a cover reveal for Pamela Erens fist middle grade novel, which we will be publishing next spring. The book is set in Chicago in the 1970s and tells the story of 11-year-old Matasha Wax, who is in the sixth grade and just starting to feel those pressures of growing up which are outside of her control. Her best friend—her only friend--Jean, has been blowing her off, and is becoming downright cruel. Her parents are in a standoff over adopting a refugee from Vietnam. The bullies in school have started to grow breasts and inches, while Matasha remains a puny four-foot-four – which means Matasha will soon need growth hormone shots every day, and she is terrified of needles.

Apart from her daily reading of the advice columns in every newspaper, keeping up with the Patty Hearst and Watergate scandals, and tracking her parents’ deteriorating relationship, Matasha is fixated by the story of Martin Kimmel, a nine-year-old boy who disappeared from Lincoln Park a few months ago, and whose body has yet to be found.

But none of these ongoing problems could have prepared Matasha for her mother’s sudden disappearance. When the letters start coming from Switzerland, she knows something is very, very wrong – but no one will tell her what’s going on, and Matasha has to figure it all out for herself.
