Our very own Ryan Greenwood has a chapter included in the new book out from OR Books, POWER CONCEDES NOTHING. The book is an inside account of the grassroots mobilization that defeated Trump and powered progressive candidates to new levels of influence. Find it here:

can you thinkk of places that might publish this? dave A review of It Runs in the Family by Frida Berrigan, published by OR books, 2014. (in progress)- Dave Eberhardt- Baltimore 4 draft action member
[email protected]
Phil’s oldest daughter, Frida has written a wonderful book- in a spare prose with tons of wit. It is not preachy- you are learning from some one who is interesting and insightful about her unique childhood , and especially about community, childbirth and parenting..
She writes: “At some level it is not so strange that I should think kids could seamlessly integrate with my life. That is how my parents dealt with the surprise of children. Pack the bottle and keep going to meetings, demonstrations and to the courthouse. All our family photos from our early years are pictures snapped at demonstrations. There are no portraits taken against fall foliage backdrops at Sears, there are no p;hotographs where we all cozy up next to the Christmas tree with mugs of steaming cocoa in ironically awful seasonal sweaters. We did not go to Disney World or water parks or the zoo or baseball games or on vacation. The Berrigans didn’t do stuff like that. We resisted.”
Is there a tinge of sadness here? Jonah House was not that far from the Baltimore Zoo,
For some one like myself, brought up in the church with a father a minister and professor of philosophy and author of The Bible and Making of Ministers, also heavily influenced by the music of church hymns and the 5th apostle, Bach, her books is just heartwarming.
It speaks of the joy in changing the world and service to others!
She writes of her parents: “They were not burdened or haunted by the ills of the world. My dad was joyful. My mom still is, in spite of everything they knew and experienced, Why? Because they saw themselves as part of the dynamic that is trying to change the world.. With that belief-and lived experience- they endowed us with a moral cheerfulness that is both sustaining and infectious.”
I was glad to be near Frida’s father only briefly- for- to stay near him was dangerous. He was risky! We do not stand nxt to prophets easily! They can get you arrested. Gary Wills, in the New York Review of Books, reviews the Berrigan Letters but mostly talks about Jesuits.
When you think about the time Phil and Liz spent in prison and contrast the tortures of Jesuit Thomas Campion under the realm of Elizabeth? It’s not that much! Think 0of dismemberment or inserts to the “quick” beneath your nails? Think about being “racked” until your appendages are dislocated? (No wonder Shakespeare was quiet about his Catholicism).
Frida’s dry sense of humor: “Growing up; we always asked our dad what he wanted for Father’s Day. We’d get a raised eye brow and a look that read something like, “What I want more than anything for Father’s Day are children who know better than to ask me.” What do you buy a man so ascetic that he reuses dental floss? One year, we got Phil Berrigan- priest, peace activist, hardcore non violent resister- a tie!”
Frida is wise : re how to talk to the enemy? Or many of her p;eers whose parents work at Electric Boat- the submarine manufacturer where she lives in Connecticut. Not “How do you sleep at night, or, Don’t you see the contradictions between your life and your work, or her favorite when demonstrating at the Pentagon, “You can’t run from a nuclear war….such conversation starters actually kill dialogue…they tell me that empathy, compassion, and mutual aid are more effective. And so I am letting go of judgement and conversion and starting with real conversation”.
curious- how do you pick the bks you print? am enjoying Frida Berrigan'd bk so much best David Eberhardt

“Amidst the politically pendulous year we’ve all had, we’re thinking with gratitude of the people in our lives who are holding it down and getting s**t done in so many ways — and scratching our heads for holiday gifts that will convey that appreciation and solidarity. Are you also grappling with a holiday shopping list amidst battling capitalism and its discontents?
To help us out with the act of radical redistribution that holiday gift giving can and should be, we turned to our trusty Beautiful Trouble strategy card deck to divine the future. (ICYMI, the Beautiful Trouble book and online toolbox of key strategies and tactics that have inspired centuries of people-powered victories are now available in a deck of more than 100 cards you can play!) While we know a single consumer choice won’t change the future of the world, small change adds up, and where we put our resources matters…”

DECOLONIZE HIPSTERS
By Grégory Pierrot
“Grégory Pierrot’s fiercely illuminating short book dissects the political complacency and racial delusions of hipsterism, but it does so with a verve, swagger and irreverence. Pierrot provides us not only an anatomy of hipsterism’s past, but a vision of its possible future.” – Adam Shatz, editor of Prophets Outcast

Sad to see that a company so keen to promote communicating well, has been so remiss in their communications with me. An order that I placed over a month ago, has still not been dispatched, and although you have refunded me, I have had to harangue you to get any information and ended up going through Paypal. This is really not acceptable.
