Along the Upper and Middle Orinoco River in Venezuela and Colombia, archaeologists have identified what may be the world’s largest collection of prehistoric rock engravings. Some stretch over tens of meters, including one record-breaking carving over 40 meters long.

Mapped across 14 sites, the engravings likely served as territorial markers or warnings to travelers, making them highly visible along the river’s trade routes. Dated through stylistic links to local pottery, the carvings may be over 2,000 years old.

The most common designs depict massive snakes—probably boas or anacondas—revered in local mythology as creator beings and dangerous predators. Other motifs include human figures and centipedes.
