Working on the next film...

Here are some images from last week's filming for the upcoming PBS "American Experience" documentary on the Garfield assassination, based on Candice Millard's outstanding book "Destiny of the Republic." Park Ranger Mary Lintern and Chief of Interpretation & Education Todd Arrington of our staff traveled to Boston and did on-camera interviews with Apograph Productions, the company making the film for PBS. These photos were taken and shared with us by the good folks at Apograph. Mary and Todd were asked questions on many different aspects of James A. Garfield's life, career, family, and more. Everyone at James A. Garfield NHS thanks Apograph Productions for including us in this exciting documentary! The film will air on PBS sometime in the fall of 2015. We'll keep everyone posted with news about the film as we receive it.

"The building was fireproof. It shows now hardly any signs of the disaster that overtook it. The walls are as good as ever; so are the floors; nothing is the worse for the fire except the furniture and 141 of the 600 men and girls that were employed in its upper three stories."
-New York Times, March 26, 1911

In the early 20th century, radium was considered such a healthful additive that dozens of companies began branding their wares as "Radium"--cookware, a "radium heater" and even "Radium silk" neckties were all advertised in popular magazines.

More on radium's lethal popularity in our new doc, "The Poisoner's Handbook" premiering Tuesday, January 7th!
